The Race Is On According To Poll

Posted By: Katie Franzios · 10/13/2010 4:00:00 PM

The race is on for those vying for the mayor's chair.

After months of Rob Ford being ahead in the polls there's been a switch.

The Ipsos Reid poll conducted for Newstalk 1010 shows George Smitherman is now leading the pack, even if it's only with a slight edge.

He now has 31 percent support, skyrocketing up eight points from a few weeks ago, overtaking front-runner Rob Ford, who has 30 per cent. Joe Pantalone is a distant third with 11 per cent support and Rocco Rossi falls further behind with four per cent support. 25 per cent are undecided.

It's a tie for gaining popularity and momentum, Smitherman and Ford are both at 31 per cent, followed by Pantalone and Rossi.

However, things aren't as neck-and-neck when considering those who will actually go out and vote on election day, with Smitherman has 38 percent support. Ford trails by six points, followed by, again, Pantalone (15%) and Rossi (3%). 17 per cent are undecided.

Why would anyone get behind Smitherman - eHealth, c Diificile, Samsung, smart meters, belittling senior citizens in nursing homes, lobbyist scandal and pharmaceutical companies getting hundreds of millions of dollars in government contracts and then donating large amounts of cash to Smitherman's riding association, eliminating essential services from OHIP coverage while deciding that sex change operations would be covered. The list goes on and on. Smitherman has no place in any political arena ever! He is a mad man hell bent on destroying anything he ever gets control of. Name one single portfolio he has operated that helped the citizens of Ontario.

31% or 30%? Also, the percentage points add up to 104. Is this correct?

Rob Ford will win. People who vote for Pantalone are voting for more of the same David Miller City Hall. People who vote for Smitherman are voting for more Dalton Mcguinty Liberal corruption and incompetence. The majority of voters will put their vote with Rob Ford.

Smitherman's climaxed and he'll be going back down the polls again. I'm not concerned. This is going to be Ford's election to win.

What has Smitherman ever done for anyone but himself???

I've been a Torontonian for over 30 years, I've always lived downtown and I'm voting for ROB FORD, I'm an older gay man and I know personally, first hand what an arrogant weasel George Smitherman is, from his coke habit, to renting male prostitutes. The guy DOESN'T exactly come across as being an integrity based individual. I'm gay and my vote's for a person I can trust. That person is ROB FORD. (and I'm not alone either)

It's very nice to see Rob Ford dropping in the polls. He seems to hate Toronto so I'd rather not have him as the mayor of this great city.

Jason: at least smitherman will talk honestly about his drug use, even his "hard" drug use... Rob Ford lied about a joint!!! Smitherman comes with problems but so does every candidate. Do not for a moment take the fact that you can be openly gay in this city lightly... Rob Ford is SCARY and will set this city back so far. How any gay person could trust him is beyond me. And when it come to money issues and budget his numbers don't makes sense anyway. I you have issues with smitherman fine, just please don't vote for Ford.

You're gay and you are voting for the guy who hates gays? Yeah, that makes sense. Ford also hates Toronto but obviously he's not alone. The self loathing on here is just pathetic! Vote Ford=Destroy Toronto. If you don't love this city, you shouldn't be here, let alone, run for office.

Smiterrman BLEW $1BILLION eHEALTH DOLLARS!!! His office was responsible for $3BILLION IN SINGLE SOURCE hand outs to liberal buddies. Are you kidding me??? and he blows it off c'est la vie "it was another life".. Are you out of your mind voting for this guy??? This is a Miller retread. Toronto's going to have to have power black outs to pay for anything when he gets his hands on the till. People...WAKE UP!!

Rob Ford is "SCARY"?! What are you six years old. The only reason you're voting for Smitherman is because you're another Gay Sheep, if the guy's gay he can do now wrong. You politicize EVERYTHING according to your sexuality which is just plain stupid. Rob Ford DOESN'T hate gays, that's not his thing, religiously he believes otherwise and so do alot of other people that doesn't mean they hate gay people. Which basically goes to show a fanatic, is a fanatic, is a fanatic it doesn't matter which side he/she is from. Smitherman is a liar, two faced, big mouthed, uneducated bully. PERIOD. Ford says what he means and means what he says PERIOD. That intimidates you so you put up signs that denigrate and defame his character shamelessly. You can't tell me Smitherman had nothing to do with that, I know Smitherman, once a weasel always a weasel.

Smitherman's agenda only knows one thing. Change the system to support the gay lifestyle. There is no way George is the best candidate for Mayor, let alone best person. "Morals", "decency" and "Smitherman" do not belong in the same sentence, unless "incredible lack of" is also included.

    Ford's goose is cooked. Finally.

Hey there's John Tory's big fat square head up above. I wonder if this latest plug for Smitherman's campaign had anything to do with the fact that Tory's youngest son George defected from the Sarah Thomson's campaign to hook up with the ranks of George Smitherman's campaign??? If only the voters knew the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Rob Ford would be their clear and obvious choice.

Tory and Smitherman had an 'arrangement' last year where only one of them would seek the mayor's job. He publicized this on his show. So naturally John's behind Cueball now. Too bad his sons won't enjoy his backroom political success, since they elected to move over to the losing team.

Who conducted this poll? John Tory and his goofy kids?

Rob Ford caught my attention (and will get my vote) when he said he will get rid of the 5 cents miller tax on the already biodegradable plastic store bags AND the $60.00 a year miller tax car fee, including, of course cutting unnecessary financial waste at city hall. smitherman lost ONE BILLION DOLLARS at Ontario eHealth and can't find a job. Who would want a looser like him/her. Not me.

Rob Ford's is far from charismatic. He doesn't dress befitting a mayor of a world-class city and he has a past that isn't befitting a mayor of a world-class city. But he is going to win. Because he represents the right of centre. I notice the democratic world inexorably moving to the right. It's happening in the city, province (yes the Conservatives will definitely win), Canada, U.S., Europe, even India, almost every democracy in the world! The common man is sick and tired of politicians who are wimps. Whether it's the global economy going down the drain, radical Islam's hatred for the rest of the world, western values that have been cherished now being severely eroded by political correctness, etc. People are just fed-up! And that's why I'm voting for Rob. He recognizes what's going on. The common man has common sense but common sense is not so common among politicians. Rob is the exception!
