Cherry's City Hall Speech Take's Shot at 'Pinko's' (click here to listen)

Posted By: David Woodard · 12/7/2010 3:20:00 PM

Hockey Analyst Don Cherry stole the show from mayor Rob Ford during the mayor's signing in ceremony.

Dressed in a hot pink suit, Cherry said he did it as a message for 'all those pinko's.'  Cherry said he's been taking flak from the 'pinko newspapers,' for his support of Rob Ford.

Cherry went on to say he likes Rob Ford because he'll save the city 'millions of dollars,' and that with Ford, 'what you see, is what you get.'

Cherry finished his heavy handed speech by saying, "I think he (Ford) is gonna be the greatest mayor this city's ever seen...and put that in your pipe and smoke it, you left wing kooks."

When Councillor Adam Vaughn was asked for comment about all the left wing comments from Cherry, Vaughn says, "Don Cherry has probably stood naked in the shower with more left-wingers than I ever have."

Well done Rob and Don. We voted for change and Rob got a land slide. We are going to stop bowing and scraping to the 'left wingers'. Move to the back of the council chambers and be quiet for 4 years. This is going to be the most exciting four years of your lives, so jump on the badwagon and enjoy the ride.

I have to say I am dissapointed in Don Cherry's comments. I know he is known as a "pit bull" but there are times that a pit bull should be muzzled and I would never say I was a left-wing pinko.

I feel sorry for Don Cherry, actually. He's done nothing but embarrass himself. I don't think he has even the slightest glimmer of understanding that this is so: more's the pity. What a sorry and unfortunate spectacle this has been. All across Canada, people are laughing - not with Don Cherry, but at him. What a pity.

Don Cherry tells it like it is. Screw you left wing hippie pinkos!!!

Cherry is being ripped to shreds because he's a bigot and in Canada we don't tolerate bigotry.

Looks like the citizens of Toronto have a bunch of rednecks in charge of the asylum after watching Cherry's tirade. White trash is now running city hall Not 1 woman on the executive committee. Why does that not surprise me?

When listening to don speak it was just like in the movies. He said what was on many minds & had the guts to say what needed to be said. Way to go, don!

It's about time this country gets rid of all that politically correct bs that a variety of socialist (excuse moi....liberal) administrations at all levels have been feeding us. This is a free society where everybody should be able to speak their beliefs (without trying to ram them down everybody's throat). Don, you're the man. We need more folks like you and Rob.

Fire Don ! No spokesperson of CBC should endorse political parties!

I can't believe that Rob Ford invites a speaker who starts off by bashing bicyclists out of the blue. Im a cyclist, motorcyclist, car driver, I'm baffled by the one-sided angry crew running this city now. It's wierd for a very pluralistic city.

Doesn't Cherry draw his CBC salary from the taxpayers?

Don Cherry is probably just senile from taking all those shots to the head playing in Rochester. While it is a person's right to speak their mind in Canada, there is still such a thing as decorum in a government setting and it should be respected. This is why political discourse is being torn to shreds in Canada, bullies like Rob Ford and mouthpieces like Don Cherry. It goes the same in the House of Commons and the Provincial Legislature; everyone is shouted down, no matter what they have to say and nothing gets done. Toronto deserves better than Rob Ford.

What Don did was nip it in the butt. I agree these left pinko's have been ruling City Hall for a while and he letting the pinko's know, don't miss with Rob. You can't tell me that councillor's like Perk, Vauhan, Mahavic and the other leftty's like them didn't say worse about Rob and the good right people. The party is over lefty's. WAY TO GO DON

@ R Tucker Ins't calling somebody "white trash" a vile racist comment based on skin colour that only a pinko would think it is OK to make? I say "launch the cyclists"
  19. david m posted on 12/07/2010 11:08 PM
please explain what cyclists have to do with this?

What type of man is Don Cherry? His comments were rude and offensive. If he has a problem with someone making fun of him and his Pink suits (un-named reporter) why doesn't he just be a man and go up that person and deal with the issue like a man. Why does he feel the need to bring this up at speach in front of City council. Not to mention he proceeds to put down (bicyclists). For what? being active and healthy? All I can say is that I'm truly disappointed and feel that the CBC should take action. What would the CBC do if Peter Mansbridge just pulled this stunt? All I know is Don Cheery showed his true colors again tonight. He's just a bully plain and simple. Too bad we keep protecting/employing people with (viewpoints) like this.

Maybe Don Cherry was out of line a little. However, if anyone was paying attention to the rhetoric that has been dished out at city hall over the last few years, then they may feel that Don's actions and statements are well deserved. Of course, none of the so called "left wing kooks" went this far out of their way to demean the opposition verbally. Yet, the actions of council have been a enough abuse in themselves of the taxpayer, and anyone who had sought to oppose them. I'd rather be called a left-wing kook, or a right-wing fanatic, than have my money misused, and my voice misrepresented by a council that opperates under a false sense of plurality. Good luck to Mayor Ford, and all the council regardless of spectral relation.

Rob Ford is EXTREMELY impulsive. As mayor he needs to carefully weigh options and possibilities before reaching decisions. He could very well end up being a disaster for us. We need a deep, intelligent, thoughtful mayor who thinks through decisions carefully and listens to all options first.

don cherry's level of stupidity and idiocy defies logic and the most frightening thing of all is that there are people who listen to him.

I had really hoped that maybe, just maybe there would be an attempt by all of these so-called grown ups to cut out the childish name-calling and divisionist attitude (this goes for both sides). Sadly, I am once again expecting too much. As soon as I heard who was going to be hanging the chain around Mr. Ford's neck, I knew something inappropriate was going to happen. Everyone's entitled to say what they feel, however, there is a time and a place for this, and Mr. Cherry's comments took away a special moment from all the councillors and their families...including Mr. Ford's. For those of you who are saying we voted for change: why couldn't the change be for a more adult approach to dealing with real issues. What happened to reasonable debate?
