Police Offer Tips to Elderly Drivers

Posted By: David Woodard · 5/24/2012 4:42:00 PM

It was an elderly couple yesterday who caused a gas leak at Royal York and Bloor after the driver hit the gas instead of the brake on Wednesday.

Thursday, an octogenarian was taken to hospital after an accident involving a TTC bus.

Police confirm say there have been more accidents of late involving elderly drivers, which is why they have added a link to a guide for seniors on the Toronto Police Facebook page.

It includes safe driving tips and questions about whether you or your parents should cut back, or stop driving altogether.

TPS Constable Wendy Drummond notes that it isn't about ability.  She says if you were a terrible driver at 30, you won't be a good driver at 80.

I suspect that the seniors who are having difficulty behind the wheel are few and far between on Facebook of all places. How about the tips in the news or the paper?

This is a very serious issue, and one that is challenging for those of us who have elderly parents. Until they become completely incompetent, and somebody institutionalizes them, our parents will always think of themselves as our parents, and as us as their kids. We aren't supposed to tell them anything; they are supposed to tell US stuff! When I tell my octogenarian Dad that he isn't the great driver that he used to be, he looks at me like I have 2 heads (and of course he wouldn't know if I did because he can't see that well anyhow or hear for that matter; probably doesn't even know that people are honking at him!). The idea, I believe, is to retain independence at all costs and to never, ever surrender to the kids!

How many accidents happen daily in the city of Toronto? How many involve middle aged drivers? Yet I never hear the accident was caused when a middle aged driver did what ever it was that caused the accident. However a big deal is made when it involves an elderly driver.
I agree there comes a point when people should stop driving because of eye sight etc. as my mother in law did voluntarily. However there are many people that are elderly that drive as well if not better than many younger people do.
