Speculation On Quebec-Style Student Protests In Ontario

Posted By: Katie Franzios · 5/24/2012 5:28:00 PM

As Ontario student groups get set to announce an action plan in the morning, politicians are weighing in on possible Quebec-style student strikes.

Premier Dalton McGuinty says it's important that all families no matter what their income have access to quality post-secondary education, underlining the province has put in place a 30 per cent tuition fee reduction for some students. He says even though Ontario has high tuition there is still a large numbers of students who go on to university and college.

NDP leader Andrea Horwath says students are rightfully frustrated with rising education costs and are disappointed in the Liberals lack of attention to that. Horwath notes the rebate doesn't affect all students.

She says not all demonstrations have to be violent, however, noting she's walked in some very peaceful student protests.

Quebec students have taken to the streets in Montreal for almost daily violent demonstrations to protest tuition increases. Ontario labour groups have called on students here to speak out as well.
