VIDEO: "Heads Up" Distraction Safety Campaign Targets Pedestrians

Look Up!

Toronto police are asking you to take a minute and stop texting and pay more attention when walking around the city.

On Tuesday, a pedestrian safety campaign will be introduced called, "Heads Up! Distraction Can Be Fatal." The launch itself will take place between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. at Queen St W. and Bay Street, but the campaign will run for the month of June.

The need for the campaign is crucial if you consider the latest statistics from police. In 2011, 2101 pedestrians were struck and 18 of them were killed. Further to that, in almost half of these cases, the pedestrian was at fault.

Much like drivers, police site cellphones and other personal communication devices as a major distraction for pedestrians.

The campaign consists of three public service announcements by the Toronto Police Service Video Services Unit, which will be posted on the Toronto Police Service YouTube page, as well as a social media messaging campaign throughout June.

It is about time that pedestrians realized that they cannot just walk and text without looking when they cross streets - as well as walk along the sidewalk.

IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!! I can't count high enough the number of times pedestrians walk onto the road either looking away from approaching traffic, not looking at all, absorbed with their smartphones, etc. yet it's the cyclists and drivers that get the blame whenever there's an accident.
