The province's Special Investigations Unit has ruled that a Peel Regional Police officer should face a charge of Assault Causing Bodily Harm after an April 14th, 2012 altercation.
Having sustained injuries before his arrest that day, 39-year-old Jamie Payne was taken to Trillium Health Centre to get checked out.
The SIU says there was some sort of "interaction" between Payne and the officer as they left the hospital to return to the police station, after which Payne complained he had suffered another injury. Instead of being taken back into the hospital he was taken to the station and locked in a holding cell.
Payne was eventually brought to William Osler Health Centre after further complaints, where doctors found that he had sustained a serious facial injury.
SIU Director Ian Scott has determined that Constable Matt Lee should be charged.
The SIU, which is called in whenever police action leads to death or serious injury, has reserved any further comment on the case because it is going to court.
