Posted By: David Woodard · 6/11/2012 11:00:00 AM

Tucker, a one and a half year-old lab mix was spotted around 2 p.m. Sunday by someone in the parking lot and it appeared that the animal was struggling.

The fire department was called in and managed to get into the vehicle to try and free the animal, but the dog had already died.

21-year old Matthieu Arbour and 20-year old Angele Lazurko, both of Val Caron, north of Sudbury will be in court next month.  They are both facing charges of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.

Newstalk1010 has confirmed that Lazurko worked at a Pet Valu store near Sudbury.

On Sunday, the temperature hovered around 30 degrees and humidex values were in the high 30s.

What is wrong with the justice system? What does getting up to 2 years in prison for animal cruelty compare to an innocent dog who died as a result of neglect of it`s owner? The dog does not get to live, while the owners are set free after 2 years in prison? Completely absurd.

To the dog in this story....If I ever see another dog in a situation like this, I am going to break open the car window and get the dog out, rather than stand there and wait for the police and firefighters like the security guard did for you. I just hope that I never have to experience something so heartbreaking...may you rest in peace sweetheart.....

The owners didn't leave the dog in the car for the purposes of killing him. There's nothing in the story to suggest that the dog was malnourished or beaten, or unloved for that matter. It was an oversight that resulted in tragedy. Two years in prison, under these circumstances, wouldn't accomplish anything because the owners have already learned their lesson. They are not going to be locking another dog inside a car on a hot day. BTW, "Anonymous", you could find your head broken open by the owner of the vehicle if you broke open the car window to get a dog out. The owner would interpret your action as an attempt to steal their car. Don't take the law into your own hands. Alert Security and call the police.

@Levi Robert John I don't know who's more stupid: people who don't know that leaving a living being locked inside a car in 30C+ heat, or the person who defends them with misplaced empathy...where's the empathy for the dead dog, dumbass?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending them but I truly think this was a tradgedy. They drove all the way downn from Sudbury to attend Woofstock with their dog and then decided to stop at the mall. The fact they left the window slightly open tells me they were just ignorant which makes this a tragedy. I remember a story a few years ago when a father left his baby in the back seat of a car on a sweltering day and it died. He was not in the habit of dropping the baby at daycare and simply forgot. Tragedies happen every day.

@HayleyP I cannot, will not, ever understand how can anyone "forget" their child in a car or otherwise?
As for the dog's owners and owners like them, ...I cannot, will not, ever understand what makes them think that a car ride is fun on a hot day? Regardless of where they come from and where they are travelling.

A note of warning to anyone wanting to bash car window: some stuffed animal toys look very much as the real thing.

Why is there no picture posted of these people.Their face should be known all over Canada
    1. Levi Robert John posted on 06/11/2012 10:59 AM
@Mark Elliott What exactly would that achieve? They aren't on the run. They aren't going to be locking another dog in a car. Do you want to subject them to the wrath of angry animal lovers who might beat them up or damage their property ?
One tragedy isn't enough for you ?

Seriously - googled the girl involved and she works at Pet Value in Sudbury - so I would say she must know better than to leave a dog in a sweltering hot car on a summer day. BUT at the same time they attended Woofstock so the dog was a pivitol part of their life - it is a gross act - where common sense is sent out the door in favor of selfish shopping. I don't take my dog anywhere in the summer where she wouldn't be welcome - indoors - with me.

@Dog Luvah I can say with 100% certainty that this pathetic moron will not have a job waiting for her at Pet Value after the tragedy yesterday.

Angele Lazurko works for Pet Valu, you would think she should know better, hope she gets fired!

if you break into the car, you get charged irrespective of your motivation. then you have to hope the charge gets withdrawn and all the legal ramifications associated with it, including the charge being picked up by the americans, then you always have to reply YES whenever you enter the US and are asked if you've ever been charged. plus fingerprinting and photographing

you can thank our system for that nightmare.

    think twice!!

To all those who are pushing for jail time, other severe things try to understand we are talking about an animal. It is just a dog.

Jail time for a dog dying? That is so absurd. What exactly was the public safety risk here? None. Zero. No impact on any human. So stop acting like there was. It`s just a dog.

The sad loss of their pet in the circumstances is more than enough consequences.

@itsadog How can you say it`s just a dog? Dogs have feelings and needs, just like we do. Just imagine if you were Tucker suffocating in that car - you wouldn't `t like it. Your comment is getting a report from me.

If I see a dog in danger in a car, I would immediately smash the window and get the dog out of there as soon as possible to save its life.

It is obvious that the dog's life was not important enough to the Vaughn Mills security staff as all they did was push water through a one inch crack in the window.

Absolutely no excuse. The 20 year old works at Pet Value and they were at Woofstock.

So sad and I'm so angry

To "itreallyisjustadog": you "reallyarejustanass". There was a time when "humans" were only those with penises... times do change, and yes, animals do have rights just as women now do.... times change....try to keep up.

To "HayleyP": You accept that people just forget their animals and kids in the backseat?....you don't plan on reproducing do you?

To "Levi Robert John": .While your comments are also not worth responding to, and I would normally simply state that you are an IDIOT, knowing that you don't have enough brain cells to take in what I want to say.. but since I have some time I will say it anyway.... No you moron, obviously they didn't plan on killing their dog, but the drunk jackasses who go whipping down the highway for fun in their car, also didn't PLAN on killing either.... I would LOVE to be the one that a car owner tries to "head-break" when I have to smash their window to pull out their 'near death' dog......Lastly, you are the last one to coach anyone on the word "empathy".

To "Elzbieta": Most of us can tell the difference between a stuffed animal and a suffering dying real thing. Not sure if there is help out there for you.

To "Proton": I don't give a flying fart if I am charged for smashing a window... but I hope everyone keeps your advice in mind in the event that property needs to be smashed to help you....

@REEAALLY Wow, sounds like you are full of anger. I never said "I ACCEPT" anything. I said it is a tragedy. Just like humans cause other tragedies every single day of our lives, pilot errors that cause plane crashes, driver errors that cause car crashes, government errors that cause 911. Tragedies can be caused by anyone, even you. Never underestimate the ignorance, and potential fralities of the human mind. I have had a dog, and I have lost my dog to illness. I have also lost humans to accidents and illness. You are not perfect, nobody is.

@REEAALLY more the court jester then the ass but any compliment is well received here.

nice to stimulate something other than the evident vicious feelings of anger and assault toward those whom the police and press named for this

so there. you have my motivation. deflect the argument away from the senseless attacks against individuals you do not know over what precise circumstances you know so very little

the act of leaving the animal in the car in conditions like that is by all measures reprehensible and disgusting to all. if we cannot treat our pets and nature in general with the slightest of respect and care then what can be expected of us as a society toward other humans

What is so sad is so much vigour is displayed in argument over the seemingly unintentional loss of life of a dog, such debate valid or not, and absolutely none over the regular premeditated drone killings approved personally by the US president, of "terror suspects" without trial nor even a shred of evidence shown, with no rights to those victims nor the "collateral" damage victims nearby. shame on us all for our indifference.

Now we see what we have come to in terms of our sense of humanity on this planet.

2012 is the end of days for truly it is evident any hint of decent civilisation on this planet is gone.

The hysteria and hatred spewed about this story from both sides pretty much goes to show how messed up my former city really is. It's just a dog and from the looks of it, it was an accident. and yet there there are vitriolic rants from either side of the spectrum , spewing hatred and vileness over something that really isn't their business. and we're up to 60 posts now. And yet, sadly, I looked at the post regarding the shooting in the eaton centre and there are a grand total of 5 posts. it didn't seem to matter to anyone that a human intentionally killed 2 other humans, injured many more and with the way our "justice system" works he'll probably only serve a few more years than these unfortunates who "killed" their dog. The posts regarding this story are the most childish and asinine I've ever seen on this site. You should all be ashamed of yourselves, no wonder the rest of the country hates us so much.

@Chris in Guangzhou Well....Should I start weeping for all "humanity" now? The children, the homeless, the aborted fetuses, the dying...and so on? What does it have to do with the story of sensless dying of a dog?
People have that luxury of making choices. It's up to people and its nations to make changes, while animals have no choice. They have to carry the brunt of human stupidity.
Some people care for people, other care for animals. I prefer the latter, so shoot me know.

@Chris in Guangzhou compare the amount of articles on the eaton centre shooting & those total number of comments to the amount of articles/comments on this story.
      you're an idiot.

these people who left their animal in the car are the exact type of people who would leave their kids in the car.

      quit being ignorant.
