More Details of Alleged TDSB Rip-Offs

Posted By: Russ Courtney · 6/22/2012 1:21:00 AM

More details are emerging about the problems the Toronto District School board is having with construction and maintenance workers.

A continuing Toronto Star investigation now reports that some workers have been discovered in bars, spending far too long at Tim Horton's, and even a man and a woman "fooling around" in a car, all while on the public dime.

What appears to happen, according to the report, is that workers signed in to work at a location leave to "get parts" for the job and are later discovered by board officials.

According to the paper, 8 workers have been fired by the board for similar behaviour. It's not known if the TDSB is trying to recoup the wages paid to the workers who were slacking off.

Another case is also under investigation where a TDSB construction worker was spotted passing out pamphlets at home offering to do odd jobs, while he should have been working for the board.

The news comes following an earlier report that the board was getting overcharged for small jobs.

@gazebos galore Hey nitwit, try addressing the issue that the story covers & contribute something useful.

This story points out how public services don't bleed $$$ & require cuts unless something in its administration is seriously amiss. How much $$$ could've gone towards our children's education instead? *SMH*

Sadly, this a) confirms the suspicions of many people that those on the public payroll are grossly overpaid and abuse their employer outrageously and b) vindicates those of us with exposure to the public sector who, for years, have said this is a huge problem. It also confirms what many of us have maintained and that is we do not need new taxes...at all. What we need is responsible managers and conscientious employees.

The union that represents these people should be decertified.

Finally, not a week ago, some TDSB official was on tv saying they needed to sell land to raise money as they had a $6 billion repair backlog. Where did they get that $6 billion figure? Was that the figure the union slobs provided for them? What's the real number?

@James It's actually quite a simple process to have a union decertified, but the trouble is that only someone INSIDE the union can start it. However, if we can get the information into the hands of the few honest people "trapped in the system," as it were, we could finally see some honesty and accountability from our public sector.

mcguinty should give deb matthews the education portfolio as well.

the left continually cry about their union brethren (and sisterthren???) and how conservaties are unfair, yet who suffers the most with these types of fiscal abuse?....the poor who need all the help they can get

@proton EXACTLY...they care about students, the poor, and the infirm, that is, right after they've ensured they've feathered their own nests at public expense.

It's called corruption boys and girls. There will _always_ be a few lowlifes who will take advantage of the system. Charge 'em, fire 'em, move on. There's lots of good, reliable folks out there who will step up and do the job. Don't blame left or right 'cause the problem has nothing to do with political stripe and everything to do with being a criminal.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Unions are nothing but organized crime with a more polished facade. It's time we forced them out of Canada and made our workplaces honest again. There's a petition to take the first step in limiting the power they so routinely abuse, http://www.tinyurl.com/we-can-advance
