Elementary teachers in favour of 1-day protest

Posted By: Newstalk 1010 · 6/23/2012 2:35:00 PM

After nine years of labour peace in Ontario schools, the Elementary Teachers' Federation has voted 93 per cent in favour of holding a one-day political protest.

McGuinty has asked teachers to accept a "real two-year wage freeze" as part of recent austerity measures.

Ontario teachers start at $41,766 to $44,292, and can make up to $92,813 in elementary schools and $94,942 in secondary schools, depending on years of service and education.

The government wants to freeze the grid so no one gets a raise because of seniority or improved credentials.

The union says it will stage a massive demonstration in Toronto if Premier Dalton McGuinty's government tries to legislate a wage freeze for teachers.

The last time that happened was in 1997 when Mike Harris was Premier.

I don't agree with the salary grid freeze because like all trades - they work on the grid system as well. Its not fair that teachers in their 2nd or 4th year get much less than teachers with 10 years experience. I do agree with a 0 percent raise for all teachers though. But, it's very unfair to penalize the teachers on the lower end of the grid system.

Forget the wage freeze, how about a wage cut. And throw in some layoffs - we don't need so many of them if we get rid of Dalton's Kinderdaycare.

It is absolutely disgusting that the people responsible for educating our children can turn around and, basically holding a knife to our children's throats, say "Empty your pockets, or else." It's time we stripped the unions of the rights they abuse in order to extort honest, innocent people. Sign the petition at http://www.tinyurl.com/we-can-advance
