York-U Hires More Security In Wake of Sex Assaults

Posted By: Michelle Rosa · 7/9/2012 6:23:00 AM

Young women pursuing their education at York University say it's a good school, but they don't want to have to keep looking over their shoulders for possible attackers.

Just between Thursday and Friday of last week, there were three sexual assaults at the main campus. More precisely, at the bus stop in front of Vari Hall.

The school has hired extra security to help ease concerns and of course, keep the campus safe.

In the latest three attacks, a man tries to start a conversation with the victim, then assaults her as she walks away.

Police describe the suspect in the attacks as black, 6 feet tall with a skinny build and a short black Afro. He may have been with a second man.

I'm not surprised this keeps happening. Vari Hall has dark allies that lead to the location. Its a big place and at night there's not always a lot of people around. In front of Vari Hall is a U-Shaped road where buses travel around to pick up students. In the middle of the U is a very dark green space, this is another spot where I can see this happening. York is not at all well lit and I was always afraid of going there since I was a part-time student who would attend courses in the evening.

The problem here isnt lighting, its the rapists in the area. They will attack whether this lighting or not. the bus stops at vari hall are lighted.

Also in response to Emily, the assaults took place around 3:30 p.m. on a weekday afternoon! So lighting most definitely NOT an issue. Plus Vari Hall bus stops are right in the heart of the campus really, very busy areas. I work on the campus and I can say that I pass those stops every day, perhaps twice or more per day. So I know the location and that part of the campus very well. So I have to agree with the other comment that the issue isn't lighting, it's that the campus, like any public institutions, is easily accessible to anyone. Unfortunately, it's within easy access to a very troubled neighbourhood so we get more than our fair share of issues which likely are a result of where the campus is located in the city.
