Proposed Ban Bites The Bullet

Posted By: Katie Franzios · 7/12/2012 3:25:00 PM

After a full day of waiting to see if council will get to debate the ammunition ban issue, Councillor Adam Vaughan's proposed bullet ban has been sent to Executive Committee to discuss.

The motion needed two-thirds support of council to get debated, but lost by a vote of 13-28.

Vaughan says the reason he wants the city to look into a bullet ban is in an effort to bring down all sorts of gun crime from both hand and long guns.

He has proposed for bullets to be like fireworks - strictly regulated. He wants the ban to cover sales and storage. He's also urging the federal government to get stricter with monitoring what passes over the Canada-U.S. border.

Vaughan underlines this isn't about gang violence, noting crimes like domestic violence can occur with legally bought ammunition.

He had hoped staff would report back on the issue early next year, with options on what the bylaw could look like.

Executive Committee will meet in the fall.

I'm glad this ban is being shot down (no pun intended), it's a complete waste of time. The only thing it will accomplish is to make the market for illegal bullets more lucrative. I say we just start executing the lowlifes running around with guns in their belts and crime on their minds. Every dead gangbanger is one fewer gangbanger, after all.

Aids kills more Canadians a year than firearms.....Maybe they should ban Gay Pride.

Good old Adam Vaughn, the proverbial Hemroid of City Councils ass. Small and when he flares up its pointless and painful. I guess he wasn't smart enough to see that ugh duhhhh the guy in Eaton Center was using an illegal!!!! Pistol. Responsible gun owner/hunters arnt going around shooting people at Jane and Finch at 3am, if you want less murders from guns in the city maybe the Police should crack down on it. Not pester and make Legal Responsible gun ownership a social periah. Hey Adam why not ban forks and knives in all city restaurants i mean their have been alot of stabbings in TO this year to,

“There is no rational reason to fire a gun in a crowded urban area, it creates danger,” Adam Vaughan..

Wow until he said that i wondered why my blatant mowing down of civilians at Crowded places was drawing so much police attention.. Thank you so much Adam, now that i know its "dangerous to fire a weapon in a crowd of people" ill stick to driving my car the opposite way on the highway, and storing radioactive waste in public parks.

@NotRetarted We should all be thankful that Adam Vaughan is here to provide these warnings. Just the other day I was down at the Ashbridges Bay, firing over the heads of the children, trying to score myself a Canada Goose for the bbq. But now that I realize it's dangerous, I'll stop. Or go to Coronation Park in Oakville...I hear there's fewer kids.
