Preacher wants women to cover up to prevent sexual assaults
An Islamic street preacher in Toronto says he wants laws changed to require women to cover up.
Al-Haashim Kamena Atangana made the comments in an email to the Toronto Sun, after a recent spate of sexual assaults at York University.
He says that women need to cover themselves to prevent sexual assaults.
Women's rights groups are blasting the comments.
"It's ridiculous. It's an insult," says Sarah Blackstock with YWCA Toronto.
She says the way women dress has nothing to do with sexual assaults.
"A woman is not the one causing a sexual assault. A man chooses to assault, and he assaults based on his attitude towards women."
She says his comments show that mysogyny still exists.
"It's actually the way women are perceived that is the problem," Blackstock says.
