Preacher wants women to cover up to prevent sexual assaults

Posted By: Justine Lewkowicz · 7/16/2012 2:04:00 PM

An Islamic street preacher in Toronto says he wants laws changed to require women to cover up.

Al-Haashim Kamena Atangana made the comments in an email to the Toronto Sun, after a recent spate of sexual assaults at York University.

He says that women need to cover themselves to prevent sexual assaults.

Women's rights groups are blasting the comments.

"It's ridiculous. It's an insult," says Sarah Blackstock with YWCA Toronto.

She says the way women dress has nothing to do with sexual assaults.

"A woman is not the one causing a sexual assault. A man chooses to assault, and he assaults based on his attitude towards women."

She says his comments show that mysogyny still exists.

"It's actually the way women are perceived that is the problem," Blackstock says.

Yes and ultimately we will stand up to Islam and send it back to the Middle Ages where it belongs. Please let these people know they can't preach their subversive, antiquated, xenophobic and sexist views in this society. As the first commenter pointed out, if he and his ilk have a problem with how we conduct ourselves, he can go back to a country where no one has any rights, save the corrupt and powerful. Funny... they leave a bitter life for a better country, but when they get here they try to make it all bitter again. Very odd, the Nation of Islam. Live by the sword, die by the sword, will you? Bring it on.... I'd rather die than live your way of life.

If I were a man, I would be very insulted by the suggestion that I I had so little self control that I would rape a woman simply because of the way she was dressed.

We better be afraid, very afraid of rants from 'lunatics' like this this guy! WE are heading on a path just like France and England. It's about time our spineless politicians take a stand against such diatribe. I feel so sorry for their women, who they treat as 'second class', sometimes worst than that. They are raped over and over, and have no recourse whatsoever. So "Bruddah", get to hell out of Toronto, and go back to your backwoods way of thinking in whatever country you came here from. Enough of you and your views!! Take a HIKE!!

I wonder how Al-Haashim Kamena Atangana would react if someone were to say, "Street preachers should keep their mouths shut to prevent them from being taken out by a sniper."

    'Nuff said.

    Kathryn Markle

This is a very tough thread to even go into, you see it has so much strength from people that set several laws in their homes that I do not understand when they flip this coin. For example if you look closely at the people attacking this man they do the following.

1} When they leave their homes they lock their doors, why don’t you leave it open when you’re going to a vacation for no one has a right to steal your property?
2} When they park their cars they lock them and one wonders why when you park in the night you don’t leave your car running with the doors open, by the way if you leave a key in ignition and your car gets stolen, your insurance gets affected.
3} When women park, they remove their hand bags and lock them into a trunk, and one wonders why you don’t leave it in the front seat, well it is not your duty to hide it but a fault of the thief that steals it.
4} When their daughters drive cars they make sure they have good tires and full tanks and they advise them that whenever you get a problem on a high way at night call for a cab and get off the high way, an advice they do not give to the sons.
5} Again on street educating their daughters, they tell them not to walk in dark alleys in the night. When you go into a bar drink but drink responsibly and with people you know, and let your friends know where you are going, oh and always have your cell phone.

And I thought this is how we educate our daughters every day, why do we turn around and tell them that it is very nice to show up in a university class when you are wearing only a G string? And that is the point we are at honestly. The other day a woman got off a seat in a sub way train, and I refused to sit on it for she was literary sitting naked with her pink nicker sided. This discussion is only fair if we stop to do all the above things and we just go after the criminals.

But my daughters are educated to act responsibly.

@EdwardM_8180 Very well said. Why is it hard for people to understand that we look for trouble??
    2. calvinhc posted on 07/16/2012 07:10 PM
@EdwardM_8180 Those all sound like good points, except this 'street preacher' is not simply saying that women should not wear G-strings. Let me update your five points to be in the same context:

      1) When one leaves one's home, one must install steel shutters over every window and door and hire an armed guard for the property.
      2) When parks one's car, one must install an opaque dome over the vehicle, and hire an armed guard for it.
      3) When women park, they must remove their hand bags and lock them into the trunk, followed by step 2.
      4) When their daughters drive cars, it is essential for them to be followed by a mechanic in a fully-equipped service vehicle.
      5) If a daugher even has the thought of going out to have fun, lock them away in the basement.

For sure one must use good sense in day to day activities, and that is exactly what Kathryn Markle was pointing out. The issue with Al-Haashim Kamena Atangana is not to just use good sense, but to go to the extreme in restricting what women can do.

But what is this preacher stating apart from telling our kids to be cautious? Isn’t that what we always train them to do? Secondly why are all attacks on him indicating to me that had he been a Catholic or protestant religious Canadian born leader we would not go after him in this manner? I am reading people buying him air tickets to leave Canada. Can you imagine if The Natives bought all of us tickets due to what we suggested? Society develops by raising suggestions and that is why I stated from get go that this is a very difficult thread for me to debate for those that are debating it have a point they reach and they flip from one side to another.

I live in Toronto and under the G20 our city was totally cut off, and walls were built to a point that the air we were breathing was screened. We had more Cops in Toronto than the population. And yet this population did not raise up and defend our constitutional rights to use any road at will. I have a friend in Norway that offered us tickets to the London Olympics, but on reading the security measures being thrown in London from you cannot come with an umbrella, you cannot bring canned food or long pens, they’re soon rejecting people to bring grown hairs passed a millimeter. All this into the name of being careful. We have decided to turn the tickets down for it is simply no longer Olympics but a state of fear. Yet these very good Canadians that defend the rights of every one are not standing up to question why London is getting closed up, for they believe that due to security we need to be cautious. And yet the very same people stand up and encourage our daughters to wear a G string and run through a dark alley for that is their right.

Is this teacher wrong? One can wonder about the double standards we are using in this debate, and always.

@EdwardM_8180 "But what is this preacher stating apart from telling our kids to be cautious?"

If I tell you that it would be a good idea to not swing a stick in the air near a beehive, that would be akin to telling you to be cautious.

This "preacher" is saying that the law should be changed to throw you in prison for ten years and receive 50 lashes per week while in there if you so much as reach for a stick within 10 metres of a beehive.

If you cannot see the difference, I truly pity you.

It's comments like the ones from this poor excuse for a human being make my blood boil. As an ex-Muslim, I am very happy that I do not have to associate with this kind of bigotry and hatred. Sexual assault of any kind is about power not about sex.

This man's backward, irrational, archaic, sexist, and moronic remarks will one day bite him in the ass harder than he can imagine. He actually thinks he's doing a service to the community by spewing such garbage from that pie hole of his. If he dislikes Canadian culture, its ways, its lifestyle, all I can say is:

    G T F O.

Does that mean that an Islamic man cannot control his sexual urges? Shame on that preacher...if I were an Islamic man I would be highly insulted by this man's comments.

I totally agree with "proton"...if one does not like the ways of our country, then leave this country.

If this preacher does not like the way that the women of North America dress, and he cannot control his urge to sexually assault a women because of her attire, then he either needs to seek therapy or leave this country.
    1. calvinhc posted on 07/17/2012 12:51 AM
@Jane I do not believe that his words are reflective of all Islamic men. One's words (and actions) are only reflective of one's own thoughts and feelings.

In other words, Al-Haashim Kamena Atangana has some deeply rooted sick thoughts towards women going on in his mind. He has the right to speak his mind, but now that it is known what he is thinking, perhaps the authorities should keep a good eye on him when he is near a woman.

@deadpresidents Women are not the property of men for one thing. Women are attracted to handsome men, so why don't the men have to keep their "body beauty" for only their wives to see? The sexist thinking you have is why people in civilized countries reject Islam.

Apparently women who live in Islamic countries report that when they are wearing their burkas they are sexually assaulted quite often...so covering up will not stop a man from touching a woman, for the simple reason that she is a woman and will be touched just because the man wants to touch her. Men are at fault for not controlling themselves. If they are having a problem with pestering sexual urges, perhaps they should seek to be castrated. It sure would solve a lot of problems if they were. I can't believe how "sexual" Islam is...it's always all about sex! Clearly the holy book was written by a man!

Dress and deportment have nothing to do with sexual assault. No more laws to regulate human behaviour or stupidity like drug, helmet, seatbelt laws. Laws are supposed to deter actions which are of serious detriment to others, not to protect individuals from themselves.

But by all means let this man espouse his point of view, that is the freedom in this country as is the freedom to either ignore it or express a differing view.

@deadpresidents Saying it twice does not make it any more correct, besides two times zero is still zero.

"Body beauty" is for anyone to see that the person (woman in this case) wants it to be seen by. That is no more of an invitation to touch (or do anything else) by the general public than showing off a nice car is an invitation for someone to do what they want with it.

There are two views here. One is the Western view that all people are born free and have the right to live their lives as they see fit as long as it doesn't interfere with others living their lives. We are, to a large degree, free to determine our own views on life and live that life as we see fit. This is by no means perfect, but it tries to recognize an essential truth... humans are born free.

The other is the Islamist view that all people are essentially born as slaves who are to be dominated by a few that have the right to control the many. This has nothing to do with protecting women; it is merely a desire to control all aspects of life under the guise of safety. Once implemented, these same folks will shoot a woman in the head or publicly stone them for disobeying - you can see videos on YouTube of the Taliban doing just that. To my way of thinking, that is not really someone acting to protect a woman from bad men; they could care less.

Two views so diametrically opposed can not help but clash as Western society slowly declines and the Islamist rises..

Where (this cleric) he comes from, can I, or ANY of the posters above me, stand up and freely critise the laws of his county, in his country, and live - with all body parts intact, and skin unscarred?

    NOT FRCKN LIKELY.

Welcome to Canada, where, even radical mumpty's like this - can say what they want. As it should be.

The preacher is stating that what you wear reflects on you. Yes I have seen the praises you have on the way women put on in North America, but why in all my working years in this city I have never seen a single girl going to apply for a job in a G string? May be you have a fight on your hands to take that G string into the board room too, for the board room is also a North American entity yet you don’t show up with a G string into it. And that is where I get a problem with this thread for I fail to understand where you stand to claim that right and where you
    drop it.

And the rest of us remain dropping our jaws in confusion of such a “selective right”
