Caribbean Carnival Parade-Goers to be Searched
If you are going to Exhibition Place to watch the annual Carribean Carnival parade August 4th, be aware that you'll likely be searched for weapons and drugs, for the first time.
Stephen Weir, the spokesman for the event insists this is not a response to the Danzig Street shootings and not a response to last year when there was a shooting after the parade. He makes the example that they are two very different events, one is a parade, the other a private party.
Weir says "We are doing it because of the concerns that really are out there about our event, from people that aren't going to be at our event." He insists "it's not a big thing to search bags but if it would make people feel better, we certainly would do it."
Weir has worked with the event since 1999, and as far as he knows, this is the first time people will be searched on the way to the bleachers. Organizers are also planning to hire over 600 private security staff, who were also brought in last year.
