Councillor Wants to Evict Criminals From TCHC Buildings

Posted By: Michelle Rosa · 7/25/2012 6:29:00 AM

In the wake of the mass shootings at the Danzig Street public housing complex last week, there's a new push to get aggressive with drug dealers and prostitutes living in public housing.

City councillor, Frances Nunziata, a member of the board of directors at Toronto Community Housing Corporation has had enough. She questions why the city is housing these people if they are known to be dealing drugs or prostituting in the community?

The outraged councillor thinks it's time to start booting these people from community housing, something she says is made extremely difficult under the current tenant laws and a process that takes far too long.

the TCHC's Tenant and Community Services Committee meets on Wednesday to discuss safety concerns that were brought forth by tenants at town hall meetings held in April.
This will only be something that will provide more motivation to get these people out of the housing system, according to Nunziata who tells The Sun, "I know all the apartment numbers of all the drug dealers and the prostitutes (in the building) but we can't evict them."

Sometimes, evicting the bad apples is what's necessary. In Ottawa in the late 80s, this was done in the Debra Dynes neighbourhood. The local residents, police and social services agencies worked together to bring peace to the neighbourhood. Of course, nothing is perfect but it is a lot more peaceful there now and the residents arent living in fear as they are in some areas of the GTA. @Rick Rick, I think you are a bit confused. A welfare recipient uses the welfare money to pay rent anywhere they choose. Toronto Community Housing is assigned to welfare recipeints and low income people, with rent geared to income. A welfare recipient will pay less rent (almost nothing) in TCHC. So evicting a TCHC resident is not taking them off welfare. Evicted people will need to pay market rents instead.

Evicting them isn't going to help; the communities they lurk in have already proven that they will side with the criminals over the police, and these creatures will find new places to hide. We need to authorize the police to begin executing these individuals when they are found. A dead man can't harm anyone, and unlike a life-term inmate, honest citizens don't have to pay for him to be fed and clothed.

You may not be able to evict them, but you can certanly get the police involved if you know that they are dealing drugs and protituting themselves there.

And if you know the appartments number, why haven't you done anything about it untill now?

Alot of them are paying market rate on the unit they are in . TCHC has caused havoc in the buildings for the elderly by renting to these types as well making elderly have to wait or go else where .they can evict and should but its hard to prove why and who have to go because someone else is on the lease . another problem is the customers are in the buildings as well what better situation to be in practicly work from home . we need drug dogs in the buildings .

What is so amazing is that our governors are very anxious to stand up and go after the results than attacking the causes. So here is where it is going to be very interesting, we have refused to give them any job out there, and the way CFRB spent two hours to question why Husbands my God was ever allowed to work in the city refers. So they are not going to be employed and now they are going to be evicted too. So you have a people with no jobs and no housing. Do you know who the drug Lords that are by the way not blacks need? They need people with a rap sheet not one conviction but a rap sheet, so now you are handing them to the drug dealers directly to be employed and housed. Now that sounds exactly like the conservatives. And when they are doing all that they are not stopping youths to go into crime. Oh I forgot that is a job of black parents, my bad.

    On a serious note

It starts with our governors failing to take a single minute to understand the problem before they drill in solutions. And a good example is when Jerry Agar went to Danzig street after the shooting. He came back and I was glad to know that for the first time he took a time to walk into a TCHC building to understand the problems into it, four he comments about it with very little knowledge. On coming back he decried the Mercedes Benzes and satellite televisions he saw in there. Oh and next day there is a reporter I forget her name who also wrote a piece about how rich these people are in government houses.

Well let me put a couple of points that Jerry Agar did not mention in his decry of very rich people living in TCHC. The conservatives themselves came and found these building that were built long ago, and they had a lot of space allocated to them. Because the welfare people don’t have cars, TCHC decided to rent out the parking’s to the public. Because many of the properties are down town where parking is a problem, many people go to TCHC and rent places to park. Many of the apartments are rented on market value, so all buildings you see that are properties of TCHCs are not rented by welfare people only but by people with paying jobs. If someone has a paying job and he is paying a market value to live in a TCHC building, you cannot turn around and define the welfare people living into the same building as rich people that are thieves. Before such a program is ran, before such an article is written, it would be very important for a news reporter to take a time to know exactly who owns that car. In fact if anyone wants to rent a parking space in one of the TCHC facilities you only have to call 416 981 5500 and they will price you out. This is a public information that I am surprised Jerry Agar missed out for he wanted to go after the poor people in the society as thieves that go after tax payer’s money. And with such a miss information, they stand up to make policies that are shallow as this one.

And Jerry Agar please don’t miss understand me that I don’t care about the tax payer, I honestly do but victimizing the weakest in society cannot become our luxury. And when you think hard about it, Prime Minister S Harper only since June has handed over 100 million dollars to Ahmed Karzai in beginning of June, few weeks ago he handed him 275 million dollars. So only between June and today we have handed over 275 million dollars to this dictator. Can you tell me one thing we have got for that money? What do we as Canadians get from Afghanistan? But you cannot ask that question for Stephen Harper is not as weak as a single mother in a TCHC housing that you can attack without even getting your facts straight.

Let me ask this question again, why don’t we simply stand up and shut down TCHC for good? Let us do it under Mayor Ford and we get some peace of mind !!!! Geez.

@EdwardM_8180 Agree with the gist of what you say - too much money going to foreign dictator in Afghanistan to help their opium business, no help at home from Harper. So true.

Stop all foreign troop deployments - we are at ware with nobody. Leave Nato what a waste. Exit the UN, it is another complete waste. Stop foreign aid - arguably, by having a more open immigration system than many countries an with our social structure to help newcomers get started here is already a massive aid which is not political simply helps people rather than particular dictator we like because the US or Nato does at any given time. Boom just saved billions to use at home and cut the taxes.

AFIK the idea to have mixed-cost-housing was to vary the mix of people living in social housing with the hope of a getting a better overall sense of community there. Arguably a failure like any attempt by government to control citizens.

Making all drugs legal would eliminate the street drug trade. Eliminating open borders and liberal mobility between US and Canada for natives would stop smuggling. But that would require government that is serious at getting to the root cause and they never are. It is no insult to natives to say they have to live by the same laws as the rest of us. It is an insult to everyone else to not do so.

Government has no right to dictate individual human behaviour whether self-destructive or not and should only be asserting controls on behaviour of individuals which is detrimental to others. Perfect examples are the electronic device ban for autos: we already had a very much interpretable reckless/unsafe driving law in place, to address consequences to accidents, yet the geniuses had to create more arguably redundant laws.

I hear your calling but that calling must also go to question why we as society fail to get fairness in the Police and court system. And here is one example, a man called Nahom Tsegazab age 19, allegedly went to a barbecue on Danzig street with a weapon and started a shooting spree with another so called punk that has not yet been arrested. Two innocent people lost their lives and many got injured and are still in hospitals. Can you explain to me why Mr. Nahom Tsegazab got charged of only reckless discharge of a fire arm? Why not attempted murder for each bullet he fired? But most importantly why wasn’t this picked up by stations like CFRB for it is the question that raised in every person I talk to living in TCHC. This man is arrested, why not fully charge him? And let me be clear here yes the judges are not keeping these people behind bars long enough, but the powers of charging a criminal lay only in the hands of Police. Why isn’t his photograph public? All killers in this city are published, we know their names and we get their photographs, we see photographs of their families and where they went to church and school, why the secrecy to Mr. Nahom Tsegazab? Had I walked into Scarborough as a Blackman and shot people in such a manner would have I also been protected?

Does the police know this man from way back?

@EdwardM_8180 According to the police Mr. Tsegazab's charges related to injured parties not any of those killed. Charges that are laid are supposed to be only those that are believed provable in a court. The public coming forward to help the police can only help them get those responsible.

Who knows precisely how many shooters there were? A lot of panic and confusion that ensued makes that difficult to prove, along with who did exactly what.

Full credit to the federal government for trying to get mandatory minimum sentences for violent crimes. Judges have been far too soft on violent crime for far too long. Unfortunately the feds are after tougher sentences for drug crimes as well, which in my view is putting people in prison and criminalizing them for what they do to their own bodies - yet those who choose to use alcohol or other "approved" drugs are not criminals. Such is the travesty and ongoing failure of having government try to judge what is right for the individual.

I think it is better for the news media to make less of this than to sensationalize every thing that happens, including arrests. But once those charged are convicted you can be sure there will be plenty reported on.

My question was not about his being charged with murder but attempted murder. Through ballistics Police can know if he killed the people and he did not, but his gun fired bullets in that night. When you fire a weapon in hundreds of people in the night, when those people includes even children, I get very concerned when Police slap you with such a minimal charge. And not only a minimal charge but they even protected his photograph.

Do you know how Nahom Tsegazab looks like? Why?

@EdwardM_8180 Innocent until proven guilty, even if you saw the suspect do it. That is our justice system and that is fair.

As far as releasing information on suspects and those charged, there is no requirement for the police services or courts to produce photos or videos of those charged. Often the media will do so and it is curious they would not do so in this case.

Perhaps the media has been nudge-nudged by the political figures to report in a certain way, not unheard of and not surprising if so.

Much of the media is so influenced by the political figures or merely the politics that an honest, free media simply reporting things as they are observed no longer truly exists.

Credit to CFRB/newstalk1010 for retaining much semblance of balance in its coverage, especially for a station that draws its' continued existence based on the sometimes strong opinions and positions taken by it's hosts.

That was the old CFRB this CFRB is pro-government and anti-people. Remember the argument we talked about of pumping money to Afghanistan when we know the man is a dictator? Well well just today Stephen Harper has promised more money to Syria. Every knock head that shows up out there, we just beg when we can pump money to you. What does the tax payer get from such wasted money? How much did we dump into Libya? What did we get out of it? But the only concern we have today is the single mother living in TCHC that has a television and we are going after her day after day and after day. Earl there is a report that has come out today of the ten most expensive MP pensions. The least is MP Michael Chong $ 2,684,816 if he were to retire in 2015, the highest is Stephen Harper who would get $ 5, 596,474 if he were to retire in 2015. And that is only to give you an idea of what kind of money we are talking about here. Is this not money from the tax payer? Why doesn’t Jerry Agar go after it? Because those are powerful Conservatives, but the woman living in TCHC is poor and thus he can go after her day in day out. It does not matter even if the so called apartment she is dwelling in has a standard worse than the one of Kenya.

    It is called hypocrisy sir.

scams of welfare recipients renting their units out for income reminds me of the jack layton olivia chow scam when they lived in subsidized housing, occupying space that a family in need was deprived of. they only moved out when they were outed.

@proton Decent subsidized housing has a mix of incomes so the places don't become slums.

So where in the name of Nimby will they live? I guess they'll just have to sell more drugs and whore more to afford the higher rent.
