A blast of British weather didn't dampen the spirits at Olympic Stadium for the opening ceremony at the London Games.
The Summer Games were declared officially open by Queen Elizabeth II near the finale of an almost four hour long show.
The best kept secret of the show was who would light the Olympic cauldron, but although soccer star David Beckham helped bring the torch to the stadium, seven young unknown athletes collectively light an elaborate caldron to help bring the end to the opening ceremonies.
The countdown to the 2012 Games came to a crescendo with a stunning, imaginative celebration of the host country.
British pop culture got the full treatment in a show that has been colourful, lively and energetic.
An explosion of fireworks against the London skyline and Paul McCartney leading a singalong wrapped up the show masterminded by Oscar winner Danny Boyle.
Several A-list celebrities, politicians and musicians were in attendance along with the Queen and some members of the Royal
Family.
Triathlete Simon Whitfield will lead the Canadian athletes into the stadium.
The Canadian team's goal is a top-12 finish in the overall standings.
