Update: Officers warn distracted walkers

Posted By: Amber Gero · 8/3/2012 8:45:00 AM

Walking and texting along the Danforth? Then police may be stopping you for a chat.

54 and 55 Division officers will be speaking to pedestrians about the use of cell phones or other electronic devices while walking. That's in the Danforth and Broadview area.

They'll be handing out pamphlets and sharing their own safety tips with pedestrians.

It hasn't happened here yet, but in some cities, people who walk and text, can be fined. In New Jersey, the fine is $85 and in Utah, it's $50 for careless walking.

    why not give them tickets? cyclists are given tickets, motorists are given tickets, never warnings, and pedestrians are a major cause of accidents involving pedestrians with the motorists almost always being charged

      @proton what would the ticket be for? not paying attention while walking in public? Are the cops supposed to start making up new laws on the spot.

    I've seen people crash into baby stollers while texting. I've seen this on the street, in malls and grocery stores. Someday some parent is going to retaliate and it won't be good for the texter.

      @Sophie True. But I have seen people bumping or walking into posts,other people, garbage cans, and so on simply by...talking to another person (not texting not talking on the cellphone), or gawking around every where else, except where they are going :-)
      Pedestrians/ drivers who ignore traffic rules are extremely fustrating.

    Seriously? When someone bumps into you on the street the resulting collision doesn't impale you or rip you to shreds.

    @MichaelP

    jaywalking. i can't keep track of the number of pedestrians crossing on red lights and even looking away from traffic, as though cars are capable of stopping on a dime

      @proton no mention of these people being on the street. But if they are jaywalking then charge them with, you know, jaywalking. Sounds like none of these people were actually doing that.

    Walker, Texas Texter Ranger will come for YOU! No more stupid laws to try and regulate human behavioural choices! All these so-called preventative laws are an infringement on personal liberties.

    Seat belt law? There is a consequence for not wearing one. We don't need a ticket to know we will not survive an accident without one. Not paying attention to where you are walking, for whatever reason (the blonde in the red dress, an incoming text....).

    The police should be spending ZERO RESOURCES on this nonsense. Go after the bad guys you idiots. Those whom are so careless as to walk into a post, a pond or another person will soon learn from the natural consequences without your help.
