CUPE Sets Up Hotline For Trash Talk

Posted By: Katie Franzios · 8/7/2012 2:48:00 PM

Now that private garbage pick-up west of Yonge Street is in full swing in Toronto, the union which used to handle the job is speaking out and hoping you will, too.

Underlining contracting things out still means taxpayers are subsidizing garbage workers salaries, CUPE local 416 head Mark Ferguson says they've set up hotline that will allow residents to report what he calls shoddy service and dangerous driving.

Ferguson says he wants new workers to be held accountable.

He says it's been documented in other cities and countries that keeping services like waste removal public is better for residents in the long run, from cost to quality standards. He says he's worried other services like water will soon be handled by private contractors.

The number for that hotline is 1-866-419-2227.

WHAT A FARCE!!! Ferguson's TRASH TALK knows nothing about accountability because all the councillors with their noses in the union's rear-end don't care about accountability or service. Nothing ever happened with the lousy service we got except to overpay workers who provided shoddy service and created one of the worst garbage strikes in Toronto history.

These new workers will have to be accountable otherwise they stand to lose the contract. They've already proven themselves in other jurisdictions as Etobicoke and Hamilton.

It's about time there's respect for taxpayers' dollars by spending it wisely and not arbitrarily OVERPAYING union employees.

Ford's on a roll. Let's hope the saner councillors will continue to privatize and finally get the taxpayers off the union yoke that has been choking us.

Shameful behaviour! The bottom line is that the union couldn't provide quality service or a competitive bid for the contract, and now the work is being done by HONEST, ACCOUNTABLE, NON-UNION workers - like it should have been all along, and like it should be in ALL public sectors. I say we use their silly hotline to report how much service has improved!

It's time to get the unions out of this country once and for all! We want an honest and accountable workforce, and we want it today! Sign the petition at tinyurl.com/we-can-advance, and e-mail Tim Hudak to show your support for his labour reforms. Let's set the example for the rest of Canada!

What a farce. As if this will be an independent unbiased source of "taxpayer feedback" from the sore loser communists. Go away. Where was this hotline when your so-called accountable workers were "on the job"? And just who is paying for this?

So glad I am not in a union. My job security and advancement depend solely on me and my performance. That is what motivates the private sector to constant improvements in what they do, unlike the communist unions.

Way to go Ford and let's get rid of these commies once and for all.

Mark Ferguson was talking about this hotline at 11:00 am yesterday. At 4:30 PM when I called it, it STILL was not set up. The number provided (1-866-419-2227) took me straight to CUPE 416 offices and they did not even have a special mail box or attendant to accept calls from people calling the hotline or anybody there answering the calls. These dummies could not even set up their own hotline correctly or spend an extra few minutes past 4:00 PM at work to do so.

And they expect us to belive they can do a better job picking up garbage.....
