City and private trash collector butting heads

Posted By: Russ Courtney · 8/10/2012 6:04:00 AM

There's a war of words between the City and it's new private garbage collector, Green for Life.

Private pickup started Tuesday, with some residents reporting garbage trucks rolling down residential streets after 10:00pm -- well past the 6 pm daily deadline spelled out in the new deal.

The company says it might take 4-6 weeks to get this initial hiccup sorted out.

The City's solid waste general manager Jim Harnum says that's not right and will consider imposing fines on GFL in a month.

Jesus Christ, at least give them a chance! It takes time to get an operation like this running smoothly. Besides, we need our services to be privatized so that the unions can never take us hostage again the way they did during the infamous summer garbage strike. So quit complaining, it could be a lot worse!

So they go the extra mile in a temporary late evening effort to get things done and you complain and want to fine them? People get real are you looking for any reason to complain?

@Earl But did they say it would take them past 6pm when they put in their bid? Of course not. Thats the point.

Leftist socialist union whiners supported by leftist socialist union media companies. If late (but friendly and efficient) garbage pick up is our biggest problem - then this city is the best in the world. Unfortunately, socialist union costs and fat government employee payments are KILLING the city and turning it into just another 3rd world urban mess.

what fines were imposed on unionized garbage collection when they would leave a mess behind, when they would dump the empty garbage cans in the middle of the street or driveways, when they didn't work for 29 days and created health and other hazards for Torontonians???? NOTHING!!! NADA!!!

these people are working overtime to get the job done and it's not costing taxpayers more. When was the last time unions worked overtime for no pay??? NEVER!!!

As a taxpayer I applaud this company and these people for trying to do a good job. It is so refreshing yet we have idiots that want to fine them???

Are we trying to appease Olivia Chow's mother because her garbage wasn't picked up by 9:00 am sharp as she claimed it was for ever, despite a neighbour claiming it was never that consistent?

This is typical of socialists. Open the door then slam it in their face if they don't succeed instantly!

@proton Really. Just like they say it is saving taxpayers anywhere from 7-11,000,000 dollars. That means 165,000 households by 11M is a saving of 66.00 per household. My tax bill has not been lowered by 66.00 so taxpayers are not saving anything. And when they reduce the number of extra garbage tags that homeowners get. Why do you think that was? Is this not costing taxpayers more now since they get less tags? And who is making more money now?

Certainly not a left right issue, the middle will hold them into account while the left and right bicker about it.

The reason they would not have levied the same sort of fines to a public service is we would be fining ourselves with our own money. now you see a system where a private company is fined, don't be surprised.. it is the cost of doing business. If you hired a landscaper you would treat them the same.

    @Toby Lake
agree however there should be some time allowed for breaking in the new contractor, after which fines would be levied

@proton There was ample time to prepare, but i do agree it is only in practice that the plans are adapted to real world situations. Including the opposition to amalgamation which is silent but inevitable.
