Top Marineland vet denies mistreatment of mammals

Posted By: Newstalk 1010 · 8/16/2012 9:42:00 AM

The top veterinarian at Marineland says the welfare of the animals in their care is the staff's number-one priority.

In her first interview with NEWSTALK 1010's Jerry Agar, Dr. June Mergl says that sick animals are treated as soon as possible and cared for with dignity and respect.

Mergl adds that the initial investigative report by the Toronto Star leaves out the fact that many animals at Marineland are elderly and under veterinary observation.

Let's hope this issue is dealt with properly and not hijacked by a small group of people that are simply against all aquariums as some politically correct stance.

@proton People are not against aquariums as a "politically correct stance" but as a moral stance. A killer whale belongs in the ocean, not a SWIMMING POOL performing for people. The treatment of the animals at Marineland illustrates some of the problems inherent with keeping marine animals in captivity, so of course the discussion about captivity needs to happen. People who are fighting against marine parks are doing so for no personal gain - operators of marine parks are doing so for MONEY.

@proton Perhaps you might think about educating yourself before posting misinformation. One suggestion...Rick Obery is a great read (the fellow who trained Flipper and is now spending his life making up for it). Many marine mammals actually commit suicide, due to their confinement; it's just not mentioned in the media. Possible poor conditions aside, keeping any living creature in captivity is cruel, but in the highly sensory world of the marine mammal, it's akin to torture. Our only legacy as humans is our constant desire to enslave all living creatures...human and animal.

Interesting. The radio station that CONSTANTLY airs Marineland commercials has now posted this article. I guess the EIGHT former trainers are all lying? Or are there FINANCIAL interests at stake here?

Here is a 10 yr. old report from Zoocheck on Marineland. It appears that the same problems exist today. The report is long but well worth the read.

@ShelaghU then why is zoocheck wasting its time and money lobbying against the toronto zoo? If these animals are in dire straits after 10 years ZC has done nothing but post a bunch of articles! They are looking for media attention to regain the credibility they lost when it was proven that they and Diebel and others basically lied that Paws sanctuary didnt have Tuberculosis. PAWS uses an animal training company notorious for the capture and selling of wild marine mammals to the entertainment industry. Look it up, Active Environments aka JV China aka Ocean Adventures. I dont support large marine mammals in captivity however these activists skew the facts daily to generate donations to their organizations and ZC needs to regain its public credibility so they can have influence this fall when the final decision about the TZoo elephants happens. Activists have made issues like this hard to address because of their history of spewing lies and propaganda. Why did these employees not do something about this before. If these animals need a new water treatment system then lets focus on making that happen and take care of their immediate needs and not cater to the anti captivity agenda. Zoocheck you have lots of money you claim to care about animal welfare then help them get the water system back on track and deal with legalities and legislation later. USDA in the USA has been infiltrated and taken over by animal rights activists, known former Human Society of United States employees and lawyers. So government legislation is not always the answer. Help the animals NOW, get the water treatment system up to par asap. Zoocheck cannot be impartial and issues like this need to be addressed objectively and rationally.

@Gillian i suggest YOU educate yourself. Allegedly disgruntled employees plus sensationalism story plus unknown activist group don't necessarily equate truth.
Very impressive interview with Dr. June Mergl.

Let a proper investigation ensue rather than special interest groups and then wait for their conclusions
