Man Arrested on Hit and Run Charges in Mississauga

Posted By: David Woodard · 8/20/2012 2:44:00 PM

Police have filed charges against a 46-year old Mississauga man in connection with a fatal hit-and-run Sunday night.

The accused wasn't supposed to be driving, police say his license had been suspended.

It happened just before 11 pm,  a 75 year-old man was riding his bike along Burnhamthorpe near Tomkin when he was hit by a white pick-up truck.

The suspect fled the scene before police tracked him down.

Jeffery Sanford has been charged with Failure to Remain Causing Death and Driving While Under Suspension.

Terrible situation with this man being suspended and driving to say nothing
of hitting a man driving and leaving..I definately have a large issue with a 75yr
old man driving a bike..Living in Port Credit , we have our share of cyclist, and they
want to drive in the lanes with the car, in my opinion..they should be steady, and I am very sure, a 75 yr old man does not fit that profile

@carol annj you obviously know nothing about senior citizens, assuming this 75 year old WASN'T steady on his bike. There are plenty of people that age and older that play sports, cycle, ski, jog, etc.

As to cyclists wanting to ride in lanes with cars, unless there's a dedicated cycling lane what else would you want cyclists to do?

The road shoulders are often full of debris swept there by street cleaners, you have manhole covers, etc. that make it an obstacle course for cyclists. Besides, bikes are vehicles according to law and belong on the road.

Please educate yourself. It is a real tragedy this man was killed however it happened

this gentleman should be locked away.....however there is a bigger picture here... who the heck in their wisdom decided that bicycles are vehicles.....with the exception of downtown sections of cities... every tiny little town and village have sidewalks not being used.. every single back road in this country has some sort of shoulder..... what happened to when we were young, and you rode your bike on the sidewalk and looked out for walkers and when you needed to ride where there were no sidewalks you rode as far away as the vehicles... most of the time in the gravel.... worked for us...

and John before you get outraged.. the next time you are in an area other than toronto.. take some pictures of who is using the sidewalks....NO ONE
