York Catholic Teachers Reach Deal

Posted By: Katie Franzios · 8/22/2012 1:18:00 PM

As the York Catholic District School Board signs on to the deal reached between the province and the Ontario English Catholic Teacher's Association, Laurel Broten seems happen that one opposition party is cozying up to their proposed bill.

Earlier in the day, Tory Leader Tim Hudak is suggested there may be some common ground on controversial legislation that would impose new contracts on Ontario teachers.

The Education Minister says she hopes all opposition members take the time to read over the bill so they understand what they are voting on and the consequences their decisions will have on families.

Teachers' contracts in the province are set to expire on August 31st and without a deal or legislation, their current contract would roll-over on September 1st.

I say legislate away their ability to strike entirely! There is too much at stake in education to allow any labour disruptions. Better yet, decertify all teacher's unions and get the union mentality of "Do the bare minimum and get the same pay as everyone else" out of our schools and away from our kids!

@Richard Collins what you think of this Richard start teachers off at min wage then maybe increase their wages by say 50¢ every 2 yrs. make them come in on wknds to clean up the schools and lay off some cleaners and save a few $$'s for the taxpayers?
      what you think?

As the husband of a teacher i can tell you a couple of things:

    1) the vast majority of teachers would have no issue with a "no strike/no lockout" rule to their employment. They have no interest in this stuff. Sadly it's the idiot union leaders and govt leaders who cause that stuff.

    2) as for the "bare minimum" - some do, but most do far more than most in the public ever see. Far fewer slackers than most occupations i can assure you. My wife has spent all of this week preparing for the school year (when she's on mat leave and not being paid). Most teachers work their butts off and spend more money on their classrooms than anyone knows (I have the credit card bills as proof).

Most teachers are fine with the deal being offered. They just want to teach and not have to involve themselves in the stupid politics.

@MichaelP I'm glad to hear that there are still honest teachers out there! If they really are so opposed to going on strike, I suggest you get your wife and her colleagues to read about the decertification process: http://www.labourwatch.com/faqs/decertify-guide/federal/general/

Unfortunately, right now we are not in the window to start the decertification process. But it would be good for them to talk about it and gather the support they'll need to get it done.
