CAW Delegates Vote for Merge With CEP

Posted By: Michelle Rosa · 8/23/2012 6:07:00 AM

A super-union is getting closer to fruition.

Canadian Auto Workers delegates voted unanimously to merge with the C-E-P labour union.

Delegates with the Communications, Energy and Paperworks Union will vote on the merger in October at their meeting in Quebec.

If it's accepted, it'll mean one union representing 300-thousand workers from about 20 difference industries.

The proposed merger comes amid a falling unionized rate. Last year, just over 31 per cent of Canadian workers belonged to a union which is down 2.5 percentage points since 1997.

I cannot wait to see their precious little superunion FAIL! Didn't you get the memo, guys? We've had enough of you crooks bullying everybody else, and we're throwing you out! You're obsolete! Go to bed, Grandpa!

@Jack We should expect them to do their job and push for as much as possible. That's how they stay in business, also thanks to gov't laws favouring certification and forced membership. It's up to business to put the brakes on uncompetitive demands.

It should also be up to businesss as well as voters to push politicians to remove those odious laws

@proton Saying that it's a union's job to do what they do is like saying it was Al Capone's job to murder people and sell bootleg liquor. What they do is reprehensible and unsustainable, and we have no room for it in civilized society.
