Poll Shows Ontario Speed Traps Worst in North America

Posted By: Michelle Rosa · 8/29/2012 6:04:00 AM

A new poll puts Mississauga right up there in the worst cities for speed traps, in North America.

The online poll was conducted by the U.S. based National Motorists Associaton.

Mississauga came in fifth place for worst speed trap cities with populations over 50-thousand. Windsor was third, while Hamilton came in fourth.

A Spokesperson for the association says the poll is meant to show the abuse against motorists. They believe speed traps don't improve highways safety and they don't slow drivers down.

As far as OPP are concerned, they don't use speed traps, although officers may focus efforts on problem areas.

Four spots in Mississauga: 1 - Cawthra southbound just south of Dundas, on the upside of the underpass, 2 - Eglinton just west of the 403, they sit in the center lane and get you in both directions, 3 - Matheson eastbound at Timberlea, on the upside of the underpass at the 403, and 4 - Tomken southbound at Timberlea, on the upside of the underpass at the 401. These are regular speed traps. There are more.

When OPP says they don't use speed traps - it could mean one of two things -

    1) they are lying / their use of the definition of "speed trap" is different than ours

    2) in Mississauga / Toronto, the normal streets aren't patrolled by OPP but rather by the city forces. Which may very well use "speed traps". Why not ask them instead of the OPP.
