CUPE Ontario Head Denies Buying Byelection

Posted By: Katie Franzios · 9/7/2012 2:20:00 PM

He rejects the idea that anyone can buy an election.

That's from CUPE Ontario president Fred Hahn who says PC leader Tim Hudak's comments disrespect the will of the people of Kitchener-Waterloo.

He says Hudak should be ashamed of the remarks.

Hahn spoke on Newstalk 1010's Jim Richards Show.

He says two people are now left trying to explain why the hotly-contested riding: Hudak and Premier Dalton McGuinty.

If this was just about rejecting the Liberals, then Hahn says the people in Kitchener-Waterloo could have fallen back on the Tories, given they held the riding for 22 years when Elizabeth Witmer was MPP. However, he says voters turned away, showing Hudak's message isn't resonating with people anymore.

While he does admit he tries to get his union's point of view out there, Hahn says ultimately it's the voters who mark the ballots and not the unions.

he may be technically correct, although it'd be interesting if one knew how much money they spent advertising, organizing, etc.

As to respecting the will of the people, I'm sure they respect the will of workers who are forced to join a union. What of the will of those people?

Public sector union thugs disrespect the will of the people all the time, and their well-being to boot. Ask "the people" how they feel about their taxes paying workers who do the bare minimum and can never be fired, about the astronomical prices the unions charge for even the smallest jobs thanks to their monopoly on services, or the infringements on our basic rights during debacles like the Summer Garbage Strike or the York Region Transit strike. We need to declaw, muzzle, and ultimately put down these unions once and for all.

@Richard, you should educate yourself. Although Hahn is a blow heart, public sector workers can get fired! Don't kid yourself! Most corporations (Costco) have the exact same clauses in their contracts like that of CAW, although they are not unionized. This keeps the workers productive. I stay late all the time to finish my job and DO NOT get paid overtime. I make a measly salary, although I pay taxes as well. Unions keep workers safe, IE: WSIB? Occupational Health and Safety??? You can thank the unions for that...or how about Stat. Holidays? Your welcome. It is every citizens right to negotiate with their employers. Are you management by chance? Thought so. Educate before you bash unions.

It is amazing soon as ordinary people exercise their democratic rights they are accused of buying an election. Yet you never hear complaints about the corporate world who bankroll the Liberals and the Conservatives and have undue influence over government policy. I guess this is acceptable.

Mr. Hudak and his party have a lot of work ahead of them if they want to gain the confidence of the voter again. The knives will be out for him within his own caucus. As it stands the conservatives are basically irrelevant. Blaming others will only bring further hardship for the party. Perhaps it's time for a step back and rebranding of the party to a more centrist approach without Mr. Hudak. Continuation of an anti labour stance will only alienate a large section of the middle class. conservatives are in no position to alienate any further voters
