MPP's to Vote on Teacher's Bill at Queen's Park

Posted By: Michelle Rosa · 9/11/2012 6:11:00 AM

Around noon on Tuesday is when voting will take place on legislation that reins in wages and cuts benefits for teachers.

The Liberals brought back the legislature early to get the bill passed before September 1st, saying the province couldn't afford the rollover of old contracts.

The proposed legislation is retroactive to September 1st, so it'll claw back any pay hikes or benefits once it becomes law.

The Conservatives are expected to help the minority Liberals pass the anti-strike bill.

I'm of two minds here. On the one hand it seems to be a legitimate contract they're reneging on and the only reason they're doing it is to save their political ass. It's the same reason they got themselves in this mess to begin with, to curry favour with teachers using our tax dollars. No different than Miller's Toronto unions.

On the other hand I'm disgusted with our politicians continually screwing taxpayers by overspending to get themselves favoured by one group or another.

Taxpayers work really hard for their money and the lack of respect for that work by wasting tax dollars is disrespectful.

I have no complaint about paying decent wages however there's no reason for the public sector to be significantly overpaid compared to the private sector. The private sector can't compete with the bottomless pit the government can draw funds from (yes, that's us).

There is NO reason the public sector should be paid more than the private sector. Let's hope future governments respect the taxpayers enough to use that guideline
