Mayor Accused of Using City Staff for His Football Teams

Posted By: Michelle Rosa · 9/12/2012 5:50:00 AM

There are new allegations against Mayor Rob Ford, and it stems from his love of football.

The Globe and Mail reports that a week after the mayor testified in court that he no longer uses taxpayer-funded staff and resources for football, it has evidence suggesting he continues to do so.

According to the article, the mayor "appears to have relied on at least two mayor's office employees and their taxpayer-funded cell phones to help administer the summer football teams he founded."

The story goes on to say that the Mayor has also hired a former quarterback of the U of T's Varsity Blues football team to work as a special assistant in his office, but he's been seen during the work day, helping the Mayor lead the Don Bosco Eagles in practice this week.

Further to that, two of Ford's special assistants are listed as contacts on the official Facebook page for the Rexdale Raiders. It was confirmed by a city official that Chris Finkel and Isaac Shirokoff's numbers were listed on the page. Those numbers, belonging to taxpayer-funded cell phones.

The mayor was criticized for his commitment to coaching football on Monday, when he left an executive committee meeting more than five hours early to coach a pre-season game for the Don Bosco Eagles. At an United Way event on Tuesday, Rob Ford told reporters, “If I'm not there the kids don't play. Very few times it conflicts with my schedule. That’s why I had to leave two hours before [the game.]”

I say, leave Rob Ford alone; he's doing good work. The more that people nit-pick at him, the more others are going to stand up for him.

@sharon bell Instead of asking Ford for the definitions of conflict-of-interest or now perjury, he should be given a test. If he can't spell it, he can't be charged with it.
