McGuinty to Teachers: Think of the Kids
As teachers across the province wear black and stop participating in volunteer activities like extracurriculars, the Premier stands by the teachers contract legislation Queen's Park passed Tuesday.
Dalton McGuinty made a plea to teachers, asking them not to put kids in the middle of any issue they have with the province. He is asking them to be consummate professionals. McGuinty says sports or art class after school are things students expect from the education system and they shouldn't have to suffer.
This comes has Municipal Affairs Minister (former Education Minister) Kathleen Wynne alludes part of the reason the Liberals didn't do well in the Kitchener-Waterloo byelection was because of the teacher legislation. Wynne says they wanted the collective bargaining process to work. She notes there are always lessons to be learned in any election process.
She underlines that she is part of the Liberal team.
McGuinty says he stands by Wynne's comments and repeats they would have liked to come to a negotiated agreement with the teachers but it just didn't happen.
