VIDEO Teachers Rally at Broten's Office

Posted By: Dave Bradley · 9/14/2012 4:03:00 PM

About 100 teachers braved the rain and gathered in a protest at the Etobicoke office of MPP Laurel Broten on Friday afternoon.

What started out with about a dozen people, grew fairly quickly, with teachers holding up signs in one hand, and umbrellas in the other.

There are also black arm bands being worn, as teachers mourn what they call, their loss of bargaining rights.

At times the teachers would start chanting, 'We want our rights back.'

Earlier this week, the McGuinty Liberals passed the 'Putting Students First Act' at Queen's Park, which forces a contract on the teachers, a contract that includes a 2 year wage freeze.

Already, a number of schools in the area have seen their extra-curricular activities cancelled for the year as a result of teacher frustrations.

The union members plan to continue the rallies, at other MPP's offices on Fridays.

I've got two things to tell these second-rate teachers while they throw their group temper tantrum.

One, just because you didn't get what you wanted does not mean democracy doesn't work. People spoke up, told their elected MPs what they wanted in this situation, and the MPs acted accordingly.

Two, just because you had the right to do something in the past does not mean that you should continue having that right forever. Two or three hundred years ago, I would have had the right under the law to own a few slaves! Thankfully, that right was taken away in the interests of basic decency and the greater good. Your "right" to hold a knife to our children's throats every few years with threats of a strike is not so different.

@Richard Collins It is difficult arguing against such flawed logic from an irrational individual, however, I will try. First, those elected individuals are MPPs, not MPs. Perhaps, if you paid more attention in school you would have gotten such basic points correct. Second, just because a group of people elected individuals to do "something", it should still be morally sound. Taking away a groups right to negotiate without the possibility to arbitration is fascist. I give my dog more rights than the government gives teachers.

Also, I would like to point out you are wrong when it comes to teachers and extracurriculars. The union has stated it is up to the individual teachers to do what they want. If some decides against doing them, that is called free will. Perhaps, they need the time after school to start a second job.

Why you would want to own slaves is beyond me. I just don't understand conservatives.
