Attendant Had to Pay for Gas and Dashers

Posted By: Dave Bradley · 9/18/2012 5:18:00 PM

Shocking new details surrounding the death of a gas station attendant on the weekend in Toronto.

Marsha Sands is a woman who lives across the street from the station and would stop in twice a week on average.

She says the man killed while trying to stop a gas and dash, told her about a month before, that he was being forced to pay when people would steal gas on his watch.

Sands was speaking with Jim Richards on the Showgram on Newstalk1010 on Tuesday.

She says the 44 year old man was getting increasingly frustrated with having to pay out of pocket for the 'gas n dashers'.

Liberal MPP Mike Colle says he's working on a private member's bill now that would force drivers to pay upfront before filling up.

This comes as no surprise to me. It has been common practice since I worked in gas stations 20 years ago. Happens with wait staff as well. It's heartless managers covering their profits on the backs of their worker's and it's disgusting. Whether it's a dine and dash or fuel and flee it's not the responsibility of the front line staff to pay back the store for these losses. Increase the security or switch to "Pay First" pumps at the gas stations but leave the workers alone.

@GregH_5652 Requiring prepay at gas stations is one good solution to this form of theft however why not get to the heart of the matter? Earned wages are the property of the employee just like cash in his bank account or in his wallet. As I understand it, no one, no individual or institution has the right to seize your property without court action or laws to that effect. Why is withholding wages treated differently then then any other form of robbery? Why doesn't our enlightened legal system take immediate action against employer theft. As is often the case it's the financially weak and vulnerable who are open to exploitatation that other employees aren't. Are bank tellers liable for hold ups?

Mike Colle solves this problem by introducing a private members bill to force drivers to pay before filling up at the pumps - typical response! Address the symptom not the problem!

The problem is the price of gas! Our governments, the oil companies and yes, even the independent owners of gas stations revel in the revenue as Joe Shmoe tries to eke out a living.

We have all looked on to see gas prices rise and I feel that each time they do these profit-hungry players are just trying to desensitize to even more cash grabbing. We screamed when gas went from 1.10 to 1.25 but now we think 1.25 is actually a great deal because we are growing accustomed to seeing 1.35 at the pump. The Canadian people will either have to raise their voices and stop this problem or simply accept the fact that prices will continue to rise.

Why as a country that has gas, are we paying more for our fuel, then the country we are selling it to?

It starts at the Big gas companies such as shell esso and petrocan , with the so called francises they are only give the franchisee a glorified manager job with what 1 point of profits ? and as usual the franchisee is a new immigrant that sees he is in a bad position and tries to protect his profits by deducting the employees pay for gas and dash because the big oil company wants to be paid for all the gas delivered to them ! the oil companies should run thier own stores do the hiring and take the losses as would any good buisiness would
