Bill to be Introduced to Prevent 'Gas and Dash'

Posted By: Michelle Rosa · 9/20/2012 6:20:00 AM

One politician is doing what he can, to make sure another fatal gas and dash doesn't happen in Ontario.

Liberal MPP Mike Colle will introduce a private member's bill Thursday, that will mean pre-paying for gas. The bill also calls for fines on gas stations that force employees to pay for any 'gas and dash' thefts during their shift.

It's called "Jayesh's Law", named after the gas station employee that was killed last Saturday.

The Ontario Ministry of Labour is also investigating the gas station where it happened. ``We owe it to the family to take a long, hard look at what lessons we might draw from this incident,'' Labour Minister Linda Jeffrey told the legislature.

The man accused of taking off without paying for the $112 dollars worth of fuel, still hasn't been found. Police urge 39 year old Max Edwin Tutiven of Toronto, to turn himself in and face a charge of second degree murder.

This is all well and good but with the profits the gas companies are raking in, is a fine really going to put a dent in their wallet or in any way tarnish their reputation? I think not.

@LuminolBlue Their reputation is already tarnished, but that doesn't matter to them.

There should be negligent homicide charges laid. Conviction or not, THAT will have an effect.

Thanks to Max Edwin Tutiven we are all to be treated as criminals and are not to be trusted with paying after we find out exactly how much we owe.

Besides, and I hate to be standing up for gas companies, the new policy would make it easy for criminals friends of station employees to agree to rip off gas since no one is on the hook. They can then share their gasoline with the employee later.

Gas companies already have a policy for their employees that states NOT to intervene in a theft for their own safety.

The penalties for Max Edwin Tutiven better be astronomical but we all know they won't be. In another article (thestar.com) it said “Tutiven also faces two outstanding warrants for gas theft in Toronto issued this year and a third in Montreal.”.
