Feds Announce GO Transit Funding

Posted By: Newstalk 1010 · 9/20/2012 11:20:00 AM

Ontario will receive more than $94 million from Ottawa to help bolster the province's commuter rail line east of Toronto.

Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty and Ontario Transportation Minister Bob Chiarelli announced the funding this morning in Whitby, Ont.

They say the private-public funding will go towards the construction of a maintenance facility for GO Transit trains, which serve the Greater Toronto Area and the Golden Horseshoe.

Flaherty says the funding is a ``big win'' for commuters and will give GO an opportunity to provide even better service in the GTA.

Chiarelli, meanwhile, says the project will also create a number of jobs during construction, as well up to 400 full-time jobs once the building is complete.

He says there's only one GO Transit maintenance facility in operation right now, on the west side of Toronto. It was built more than 30 years ago.

Its not sexy but its nice. Why do the Feds not come up with the money to Electrify the Union to Georgetown line. The savings on fuel alone has to give a payback. Let alone the better air, quieter trains and increased speed.

@SteveB_10 Because Flahertyconstiuency is on the East side not the west.

@SteveB_10 Heh, at first all I saw was "electrify the union." I thought hey, sounds good!

In all seriousness, yeah, let's modernize these trains and clean up the air a bit.

What is the private sector actually *doing* here? All I see is some government funding.
