TTC union threatens work-to-rule ahead of outsourcing vote

Mayor Rob Ford is squarely behind a potential move that could have a big impact on transit service.

It comes in the form of a proposal that will be voted on by the transit commission on Thursday.

TTC staffers recommend outsourcing 159 unionised bus cleaning jobs to the private sector at a savings of $4.29 million dollars per year.

Their report recommends giving a pair of companies 2-year contracts, worth $7.25 million combined.

Speaking on NEWSTALK 1010's The City, Rob Ford says that the level of service will stay the same.

"When you can save close to $4.5 million per year, I don't know how anyone can disagree with that," he says.

But not everyone agrees.

Leaders with the Amalgamated Transit Union are threatening a work-to-rule campaign if the move gets the green-light.

As a result, TTC service could be slowed down by drivers sticking only to posted speed limits.

The union could also refuse to let workers stay on the job above and beyond their 48-hour work week.

We should all thank the union for this threatened action as it provides increased incentive to outsource the cleaners. Then go after other unions at the TTC and keep going after them until they're gone. Get rid of these pariahs
