Founder of 'Sam the Record Man' Passes Away

Posted By: Michelle Rosa · 9/24/2012 12:19:00 AM

It's the place where many torontonians bought their first 8-Track or cassette.

Sam the Record man was an institution, and the man responsible for founding it, has passed away.

Sam Sniderman and his family opened the iconic Yonge Street location in 1959 and it became a landmark. It wasn't until 2007 that the giant sign and the doors to the business closed for good, making way for Ryerson University to use the building for their own purposes.

A major promoter of Canadian music, Sniderman received the Order of Canada in 1976.

He was also inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame in 1997.

Sniderman was 92.

Sam, I met you, actually I saw you hanging at the store way way way back in the 70s or very early 80s, maybe I just think I did. but I digress, I have to thank you for making Yonge Street the p,lace to go and Sam's the place to shop for all the latest and greatest tunes. Loved the Saturday Morning, Vinyl LP $4.99 deals, The Boxing Day standing outside around the corner while I froze until the doors opened. Once inside, the deals were awesome, more so for you,, but I built up a nice collection which I still have to this day and still play. I remember the transition to CDS, the upper floor, Jazz,Blues world collection, Then the expansion. OR maybe I simply have it all mixed up, in any case, Sam, you were one of a kind giving us mainstream, classic and eclectic music for every taste. People owe you a debt of gratitude for making Yonge street the place to be. You added something to the area which no other did before, during, or after the doors closed. "I'm going to Sam's" was not just something to say, it meant something. So once again, thank You. "If music be the food of life, play on."
