New TTC Streetcar Rolls Into Town

Posted By: Amber Gero · 9/26/2012 11:52:00 AM

A lot of people have been Tweeting pictures of the new TTC streetcar rolling into town aboard a freight train.

Well don't get too excited yet as the new, sleeker, air conditioned cars won't be opening it's doors on a track near you anytime soon.

"It will be on the streets, that is people will see it on the network, sometime in early 2013 before the public actually get a look at it, and 2014 before we press it into service."said TTC spokesperson Brad Ross.

"The new streetcars are low-floor, that means that they are fully accessible. There is a two-stage ramp that deploys for people with mobility devices. The streetcars also have four doors so it allows for all-door boarding."said Ross.

Ross says the new streetcars are also air conditioned, which will be a big relief to daily riders who often complain about the sweltering streetcars.

The new cars will be rolled in over time, with the entire fleet expected to be completed by 2018.

hope it requires fewer staff to run and maintain it so we're not hijacked by the union

@proton Your hopes have been answered.

These new vehicles hold about twice the number of passengers as the CLRVs do (or about 1/3 more than an ALRV), so one operator is needed for twice the number of passengers. The cost of paying operators is the majority of the cost of operating any transit vehicle.

As for maintenance costs, at least for the early part of their lives there will be warranty coverage.
