Conservative MP Pro-Life Motion Defeated in House of Commons

Posted By: David Woodard · 9/26/2012 8:10:00 PM

A Conservative MP's pro-life bid to have Parliament study the definition of a human being has gone down to defeat in the House of Commons.

Stephen Woodworth's motion was voted down 203-91.

Eight cabinet ministers voted in favour of the motion, including Status of Women Minister Rona Ambrose, government House leader Peter Van Loan and Trade Minister Ed Fast.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper had allowed his caucus to vote freely on the issue, but did not vote for it out of concern it would re-open the debate on abortion.

Four Liberals also voted in favour of Woodworth's motion, while the NDP caucus opposed it.

The motion would have instructed a Commons committee to study a section of the Criminal Code that declares a child a human being when it emerges alive from the mother's womb.

So ... "Prime Minister Stephen Harper had allowed his caucus to vote freely on the issue, but did not vote for it out of concern it would re-open the debate on abortion." ... As if there has EVER been a 'Free Vote" allowed by the One-Man Harper Band. Another example of just how spineless and weak Harper really is. Don't you love this latest sample of the sad state of leadership in this country?

@Only Common Sense this "sad state of leadership" you describe has helped keep us at the forefront of economic development relative to the US and most of Europe. Perhaps you'd prefer a rudderless Liberal leader or a "spend the next 10 generations today" NDP leadership. Maybe you should move to Greece, Spain, Ireland, etc.

You have the luxury of complaining because we have it so good here

Abortion shouldn't be a right, it should be a RESPONSIBILITY. Imagine a world where once you know you're pregnant, you are assessed by the same process used by adoption agencies to discover whether you would be a fit parent and capable of giving the child a good life. If you fail, you are given a court order to appear at a women's clinic within the next 7 days.

No more welfare moms with seven kids to feed and all of them destined to be gangbangers and addicts. No more teen moms with no clue what they're doing. Less overpopulation, less drain on public services, an increase in quality of life for everyone.
