The concerns about skin cancer and young people have prompted Peel Region to implement a full-on ban on indoor tanning for anyone under 18 years of age.

Council heard from several delegates who spoke to the dangers of tanning at their meeting Thursday evening, cementing their decision.

From now on, tanning businesses must post warning signs and ask any potential customers for I.D. There are about 65 tanning facilities currently operating in Peel.

Annette Cyr of the Melanoma Network of Canada was one of the speakers. She said, “Tanning beds are a real source of not only aggravation, but I think a threat to the health of our youth across this country, I really want to encourage you to endorse the report that has come from your own health officer and to move forward with it.”

In August, Oakville became the first municipality in the province to ban minors from using indoor tanning salons.
