Poll Finds Liberals Would Win With Trudeau Leadership

Posted By: Michelle Rosa · 9/28/2012 6:26:00 AM

A "what if" public opinion shows Justin Trudeau could lead the Federal Liberals back to power.

The National Post paid Forum Research to do some robo calls after the story broke this week that Trudeau would announce next week, he will seek the party leadership.

The numbers show with Trudeau at the helm, the Liberals would be returned to power with 39 percent of the popular vote.  The Harper Conservatives would be second at 32 percent and the NDP would be bumped back into third-party status at 20 percent. 39 percent for the Liberals would not necessarily secure a majority.

The poll, a telephone survey of 1,707 randomly selected Canadian adults taken on Sept. 26, is accurate +/-2%, 19 times out of 20.

    This poll result is no surprise given that:
    1. The country is growing very tired of the Harper one-man-show that has produced more off-loading to the provinces and municipalities than any other government in our history and the "blind-eye" approach that it has taken to tens of thousands of jobs being taken overseas;
    2. The age group that votes with greatest regularity have mostly fond memories of Pierre Trudeau, who accomplished many more positives than negatives during his almost 16 years at the helm;
    3. Add to that the reasoning that a young, energetic leader such as Justin would do much to bring the younger generation back to the voting booth;
    4. And, yes, the icing on the cake ... the NDP would be relegated once again to their proper spot as a "rump" faction in the House of Commons.

      @Only Common Sense Accomplishments like the War Measures Act or Official Languages Act or Local Initiatives Program (which made many crooked people rich on taxpayers backs)?

      @Only Common Sense Your points 2, 3, and 4 are good, but trying to get past point 1 almost makes them moot in an argument. Just exactly what 'off-loading' has the Harper government done that makes it 'more than any other government in our history'?!?

      That aside, I am not surprised with the poll results as well. I know of one family that now has second and third generations Canadian born who firmly believe that if it weren't because of Pierre Trudeau, the first generation that arrived here would not be here. Fact of the matter is that their first generation came to Canada in 1967. It doesn't seem to matter to them that Pierre Trudeau was not Prime Minister until April 20, 1968, so I have little doubt that a Justin Trudeau would be any less of a god to them.

    A lot of years ago, I was driving taxi in Ottawa, picked up a female reporter from the CTV station there after a pre-election debate between Pierre Trudeau and Joe Clark. She told me that she had surveyed several women about who they intended to vote for. Her results - something like 67% were planning to vote for Trudeau "because he has charisma". Like father, like son?

    very predictable! i remember the effect his dad on the youth of the country in the late 60's. the man was an articulate hippie with girl groupies following him around. People have to remember a lot of Liberals stayed home past 2 elections. the party was basically leaderless. things will calm down somet but i see the same kind of qualities in Justin as his dad maybe not as articulate at this point. if he surrounds himself with the right people and learns i see Justin galvanizing the 18-40 yr old voter who usually don't vote in large numbers like no other politician in this country can do. we'll see! just look at the poll numbers and he's not announced yet..

    This poll confirms that 39 percent of the country are idiots.

      @Sean Considering how crooked the Tories, Grits and Dippers are this just suggests that the roughly 91% of the voting public are idiots.

      @Sean Sean, we already learned that 39% of the country are idiots in last year's election.
