Mirvish plans to build condo towers at King and John

Posted By: Justine Lewkowicz · 9/30/2012 9:28:00 AM

The King and John area has seen a lot of change the past couple of years with the addition of the TIFF Bell Lightbox, and more recently the Ritz-Carlton hotel. The area is now the focus of the Toronto International Film Festival.

But David Mirvish says while you can take in theatre, film and dinner in the area, you still can't buy a pair of shoes.

That is one of the reasons why he wants to transform King St some more, and he has a big plan to do so.

Mirvish will be applying for re-zoning. The theatre mogul wants to tear down the Princess of Wales theatre and its neighbouring buildings and put up three condo towers.

On the ground floors, there would be retail space and two museums.

Mirvish has partnered up with famous architect Frank Gehry, who designed the new AGO, to make it happen.

If everything goes through, the development would take four to seven years to construct.

This article is so uninformed and total BS. you fail to mention that the new podium is design by world renowned architect frank gehry. this isnt just another condo development, this is a large scale art condo project that will be revolutionary for the city of Toronto. If this goes through, These condos willl revolutionize our skyline and most importantly add culture. These are not just going to be three glass condos, they will have Frank Gehry design. Hes 83 years old and he grew up in Toronto, and these condos will be acclaimed worldwide. I dont think you even know that these condos would be the tallest in canada aswell.

@Krzysztof Garbos I've seen the designs they've released. We are talking about incredibly large towers with lots of glass, where maybe 4 of the bottom floors are dedicated to things other than condos. The rest of them are condo units. You can glorify how pretty they look, and say they are just the darnedest architectural style imaginable, but in reality they are for the most part just condos. They will not revolutionise our skyline, no more than the condos along the waterfront have. They will add some culture perhaps, but nothing significant enough to be glorifying. More likely than not they will end up being like the addition to the rom. Just an odd thing in a city of oddities, but still nothing special.
