Missing Ajax teen's body found in Pickering

Posted By: Siobhan Morris · 9/30/2012 3:40:00 PM

Ajax teen Mitchell Somerville has been found, but he isn't going home.

While looking for the missing 17-year-old in Pickering on Sunday, Durham Regional Police pulled a body from the waters of Frenchman's Bay.

Inspector Bruce Kovack says the body "appears to be" Mitch, but it will take an autopsy to say for sure.

A post by the administrator of a Facebook page dedicated to finding Mitch says the body is his.  There's also a message from Mitch's family, asking for privacy as they mourn the loss of "such an amazing young man".

Word of Mitch's death spread quickly across Facebook & twitter.  His baseball team, The Ontario Blue Jays tweeted: "Today is a tragic day as we've lost a member of our extended family far too soon".

The body found had been in the water for "some time".  An autopsy will determine how the person died but Kovack says as far as he knows, foul play isn't suspected.

On the night of September 21st, Mitch texted his dad to say he was headed home but he never made it.  2 girls say they picked up a guy matching Mitch's description in Whitby & gave him a lift to Pickering early on September 22nd.  That day, Mitch's backpack was found at Bruce Hanscombe Park.

Police are still trying to re-trace Mitch's final hours & are asking anyone with any information to speak up by calling Durham Police at 905-579-1520 x2531.
