*VIDEO* Traffic Headaches in Vaughan

Posted By: Katie Franzios · 10/1/2012 3:54:00 PM

There have been construction crews in the Highway 7 and Bayview area for some time now, which has meant lane reductions and all around traffic headaches.

In the spring, Highway 7 east of Keele will be torn up to make way for a dedicated bus lane and shelters. The 3.5 km stretch will be finished in 2015.

Metrolinx will also be digging up areas around the road to expand it so other traffic won't lose any lanes.

While officials admit there will be lane reductions throughout the whole process, they underline there will always be at least be one lane of traffic in each direction.

Metrolinx says the ling-term transit benefits will outweigh whatever inconveniences may take place until then.

The traffic headaches on Highway 7 east of Bayview have had little to do with the construction, as this story implies. Long before the construction started, this stretch of road has come close to nightmare status long before the construction.

For the most part, there have been NO LANE REDUCTIONS for through traffic during this process. That's right folks, there was THREE LANES for traffic each way before the construction, and there were THREE LANES both ways during most of the construction. Yes, there were some short periods where some through lanes had to be closed, and turning lanes had to be altered, but most of the time all through lanes remained opened.

They did have to shift to the left and right several times along the way, which unfortunately makes a whole lot of drivers have to slow down to 30 km/h because it is too much for them to handle. Outside of rush hours, a driver with decent skills could navigate the entire construction site at 60 km/h.

Now, compare this sort of construction, which would apply for an LRT route as well as a BRT route, with something like the intersection of Finch and Keele. The underground, out of the way subway being built there has required long term lane closures.

Did you know Bayview and Highway 7 is on the border of MARKHAM AND RICHMOND HILL, not Vaughan....

@Adam Ford The story is about upcoming construction on Highway 7 east of Keele, which IS in Vaughan. The stretch of Highway 7 east of Bayview is cited as an example as this portion of the project has been under construction for awhile now.
