New TDSB guidelines for dealing with transgender students
The Toronto District School Board says transgender students must be accommodated according to whichever gender they identify with.
The board released has released guidelines saying students have the right to use whichever washroom fits their own gender preference.
The policy also says school officials can't release a student's gender status to parents or guardians the student's OK.
Staff members are being encouraged to talk about transgender students' preferences at the start of the school year, including how they'd like to be referenced in letters or phone calls home.
The guidelines are in response to a human rights complaint launched by a transgender student.
