VIDEOS: Premier McGuinty Resigns

Posted By: David Woodard · 10/16/2012 6:15:00 AM

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty surprised political observers by announcing he has prorogued the legislature and will step down as party leader.

McGuinty made the surprise announcements to an emergency meeting of the Liberal caucus after his government faced a second contempt motion over two cancelled power plants.

He says there was little hope of getting the public sector wage freeze the minority government needs to trim the $14.4-billion deficit because the opposition parties are opposed, so he adjourned the legislature to allow time for negotiations.

McGuinty also says after 16 years as Liberal leader and the past nine as premier, it's time for new blood to take over.

He told the caucus the Liberals have made some mistakes in government, but got the big things right in education, health care and the environment.

The ONE thing the Liberals got right was Bill 115, and even that wasn't nearly strict enough. We need to elect the Conservatives to get some real labour reform in our province.

@Richard Collins Are you kidding me? That's one of the worst things they did to our fair province. I say take his dictatorial state of government elsewhere. Good riddance to bad government. Shame on the Conservatives too, they're just as useless.

The people of Ontario should be dancing in the streets!!!

Goodbye to the Second-worst Premier in Ontario history!!! The people of Ontario got everything they deserved, since they never should have re-elected him once, let alone twice.

Goodbye Premier Dad!!! Don't let the door hit you on the way out. (But please, don't leave town - the OPP and the RCMP might want to ask you some questions)

@murray Remember you heard it here, first.
The one-man-Harper-band won't face anyone in the next federal election - he'll be too busy running along behind his mentor, Lyin" Brian, to pick up his own corporate directorships south of the border.

I am glad that Jerry Agar is telling his listeners the hard, cold truth about what Dalton is doing here. He is facing a scandal (power plants) which will show irrefutably that his party was wiling to waste hundreds of millions to buy two seats, and both he and some of his cronies were almost certainly looking at contempt of parliament. With no majority, he couldn't bury the scandals, so he did the only thing he could do to salvage his own hide and possibly the fortunes of his party...resign AND prorogue parliament. It's a base and transparent attempt to make the truth about his mendacity disappear.

It's sickening reading other journalists who are now trying to be magnanimous. The truth is, Dalton is has been lying since his first campaign for premier. Since then his lies have been compounded by hugely wasteful scandals and even bigger lies. He's left the province in vastly worse shape than when he started. I have nothing but contempt for the man, and have no problem saying so. I am glad that Jerry is equally as blunt.

I would rather see Dalton behind bars where he belongs.

mcguinty is likely the most cowardly spineless premier this province has ever elected. the fact he wasn't turfed after his performance over caledonia shows how pathetic the voters of ontario are. it also showed the feebleness of the opposition party leaders for not questioning him daily about this until he resigned.

Caledonia alone was enough to demonstrate he wasn't fit for the job.
