An industrial area in Whitby has been closed down on Tuesday morning for a police investigation.

Durham Regional Police say they have surrounded an industrial building on Hopkins Street as part of an ongoing investigation but won't provide any further details.

Police say they have been at the building since 1:47 a.m., as a result of an investigation that  led officers there.

As a result, Hopkins Street is closed between Hwy. 2 and Consumers Drive.

Motorists are being urged to use alternate routes to avoid the area.

Police say they will provide an update later in the day.
