*UPDATE* Mike Bullard lucky to be alive after motorcycle/Hummer crash

Posted By: Siobhan Morris · 10/23/2012 6:04:00 PM

Newstalk 1010 host Mike Bullard is lucky to be alive after a run in with Hummer on his beloved motorcycle.

Bullard says he was going out for coffee when the 2 crashed at Indian Rd & the South Service Rd in Mississauga on Saturday.

The host of the Beyond the Mic says when he realized he couldn't avoid colliding with the Hummer, he aimed for the truck's tire hitting it full force, causing it to explode.  His motorcycle bounced back & did a 180.

It was what he did next that paramedics & Peel Police say saved Bullard's life.

Bullard says he kicked himself away from the bike & under the Hummer, grabbing on to the transmission so he wouldn't slide out the other side & potentially be hit by another car.

Peel Police Constable Thomas Ruttan says Bullard is "an extremely lucky man".  He says it isn't too often that motorcyclists walk away from crash with just some bumps & scrapes.

Bullard did get 15 stitches in his shin, but he could have lost his foot.  While he was under the Hummer, it reversed over one of his heels.  Bullard's feet were protected by motorcycle boots.

He says it only took 10 minutes for firefighters to jack up the truck & free him.  Before they arrived he started wiggling his fingers & toes to make sure everything was moving as it should.  He says it was then he realized he may have just had the luckiest break of his life.

Bullard brushed off his near-death experience, saying it wasn't as harrowing as his bi-weekly air checks, but close.

Bullard escaped with his life but his motorcycle is a write-off.  The driver of the Hummer has been charged with careless driving.

You're a lucky man, Mike. And if that wasn't a warning then I
don't what it was. Bike vs. auto: yep, you guessed it. Bike loss every time. Glad that you're OK.:-)

You know, I think this qualifies as a miracle. The officer was right, it isn't too often when you are in a bike crash that you actually walk away. They are called donorcycles for a reason.

@Leasa "They are called donorcycles for a reason. "
      You're an idiot!

@Leasa We used to call them "murdercycles", lots of good people killed on them. Glad to hear you are okay.

reminder to all folks riding motorcycles--WEAR PROPER GEAR! On a chilly October day, a leather jacket may not look as bare skin and a halter top (even on Mike!) ;-)

Mike, thank god you're ok! My lunch hours depend on you! Seriously, well done sir. My Dad rides a bike and I know how quickly this kind of thing can go badly. Get well soon and I will be listening when of are back in the chair.

I love all the comments blaming the bike. The fact of the matter is... It's the idiots who simply take a quick glance before moving, instead of actually stopping and LOOKING for motorcycles, or pedestrians approaching the crosswalk. Oh and it's not because he's a smoker either!! P.S. they BACKED UP onto his foot?!?!

Well done, Mike - not so much luck as it was quick thinking on your part - your primary strength. I'm very pleased to learn you're ok. Also proof that it's time to tighten up the driving licence rules. After all, anyone driving a Hummer in the first place has to be too stupid to be out actually driving one.

@Only Common Sense That was cute. Perhaps a Hummer driver will have the decency to speed up next time he sees you. Do society a small favor. After you are struck, he might say something along the lines of "Anyone riding a bike has to be too stupid to be out actually riding one" See what I did there?

First thing I did today was look at the news, because yesterday the accident I drove by I was sure the man under the truck was dead. It bothered me all night last night, and I was so upset yesterday when we saw this accident on South Service/Indian Rd, we all prayed for the man we saw, so I guess our prayers were answered. This is such incredible news, I am so happy Mike is alright, this is truly an amazing story and one I definitely have to share. Just goes to show, every day is a gift, so celebate it!

As we who ride motorcycles all know things happen very quickly. As our safety guy in our club tells us all the time, "WEAR THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT" We don't go out on a ride saying today I'm going to have an accident.
I'm glad you didn't get hurt to bad.

This song popped into my head that you always kid about on your show. "You've been injured, You've been hurt..." All kidding aside, glad you're Ok Mike. It looks like your quick reactions and experience got you out of a dangerous situation. Looking forward to hearing you show as soon as you've recovered.
