Mayor Ford takes aim at water bottle ban

Posted By: Siobhan Morris · 10/21/2012 6:34:00 PM

Mayor Rob Ford wants to bring bottled water back to city-owned buildings, community centres & parks.

The ban was approved in the David Miller days, but didn't take effect until this January.

Speaking on Newstalk 1010's The City, Mayor Ford says the issue needs to be brought back to the floor.

Guest, councillor Vince Crisanti says it's "absurd" to have to offer water in cups to visitors at City Hall that end up spilling.  Councillor Doug Ford calls it "embarrassing".

Neither Ford brother could understand why it's OK for the city to allow the sale of bottled cola, root beer, ginger ale & juice on their land, but not water.

The ban was meant to encourage Torontonians to grab reusable water bottles for their H20 & save energy used the recycling process.

Giorgio Mammoliti tried to get the ban on bottled water on city-owned properties reversed in the spring of 2011.  His motion was lost 18-24.

For the most part I agree with Rob Ford but on this issue I think he has it all wrong. Toronto has arguably the best tap water in the world and he should not be promoting one of the laziest and most wasteful industries in human history. We would be much better off with glass water bottles and a brewers retail style recycling program instead of awful plastic.

@Paul Nice idea, except that in trying to look environmentally friendly, that would do more damage to the environment due to all the fuel that would have to be burned to transport all those glass bottles around and to properly clean them for reuse.

As "awful" as plastic can be in some situations, there are MANY situations where the use of plastic has substantially reduced the amount of fuel we burn. Vehicles themselves are ligher due to the use of plastics over other materials, and all that bad, nasty plastic packaging makes for a MUCH smaller percentage of cargo weight due to the packaging, allowing us to move more product with the same amount of fuel.

There are bigger issues that the mayor should be dealing with. Instead, we get grocery bags and bottled water.
