Broten Meets With ETFO Head

Posted By: Katie Franzios · 10/23/2012 5:42:00 PM

The head of the province's elementary teacher's union has met with the Education Minister at Queen's Park for almost an hour on Tuesday afternoon to talk about comments on your kids' fall report cards and other actions taken after the province legislated a teacher's contract framework.

Last week, it was revealed Elementary Teacher's Federation of Ontario (ETFO) president Sam Hammond  instructed teachers to leave only one line in comments section, instead of details parents are used to getting. Teachers have also been refusing to take part in volunteer extra curricular activities.

Laurel Broten called the meeting a "thorough discussion" and says it was a chance for both sides to bring up concerns. However, she notes the two sides are still far apart when it comes to extra-curriculars and the report cards.

"I am disappointed that we were not able to come to agreement on these items," Broten said in a statement.

The education minister went on to say the door is open for discussions with ETFO to talk with the province.

ETFO says they have no plans to make a statement.

The head of the province's secondary teacher's union is expected to meet with Broten on Wednesday morning.

As long as the government is standing up for the interests of the taxpayer, the unions will never, ever agree with them. The entire union business model is built on grabbing as much money as they can, and using threats and extortion when the money runs out to scare us into giving them more. Unions are very much a cancer, malignant and with no concern for anything except consuming everything they can.

@Jack Jack your comment is hilarious since the Liberal Representatives and the Union Reps on the Ontario College of Teachers agree on issues all the time. Both sides in this stand off are doing nothing more then grand standing. Nothing more nothing less.....

First off, I cannot believe the incompetence of this woman. She is the minister of education and does not even know that we are not writing report cards in the fall??? Comon. We are sending home progress reports... (which have always had minimal comments) and have been that way for 2 years. There are no report cards until Feb.2013.

Secondly, she also has no idea what the guidelines are for writing these reports nor that the guidelines come from a document that her office issued. Wow. Just resign.

I think the teacher's union is getting stronger. There are so many unions sticking together. It isn't just the teachers union taking up this issue of Bill 115 to the supreme courts. Those who are NOT teachers nor are they Parents can simply not understand that this bill infringes upon the middle classes rights. Those who are not standing in front of 30 students everyday cannot understand how much more difficult a teacher's job has become since the passing of this bill. And those who are NOT teachers cannot understand who lies the Education Minisiter is telling. Those who are NOT teachers cannot understand what teachers do everyday and cannot understand that the Education Minister is naive, a lier and has clearly never been a classroom teacher herself. No one has the right to get their noses involved and express opinions about careers in which they know nothing about. I am not an Accountant and nor will I ever presume to know what being an Accountant entails.
