Premier In Elliot Lake

Posted By: Katie Franzios · 10/25/2012 2:44:00 PM

Three weeks after the families of the Algo Centre mall collapse in Elliot Lake launched an $11 million dollar lawsuit against the developer and the provincial government, the premier popped into its newly established development centre.

Dalton McGuinty says this trip was one of the things on his To-Do list before he walks away from his job as premier. McGuinty says he feels a real connection with the community.

He mused about the inquiry into the mall collapse, his visit coming just 24 hours before Commissioner Paul Belanger hears testimony from local residents, including members of the victim's families.

McGuinty underlines he's not going to try and predict what kind of recommendations will be made to both building codes and disaster response.

Elliot Lake survives on Government monies that are squandard amongst the old bys club. The monies that have come into this town over the years and no headway in sustainable jobs for people here. The powers to be have turned down any decent business vertures that have shown an interest here. It is a matter of Power and Control. All parties knew the state of the mall and did nothing. Makes you wonder if they were waiting for something to happen. It was the only option for this town to be rebuilt. Look at all the vultures anboard now. How can the same people be intrusted with rebuilding the town when they were the ones who let things get to the state that a Mall would collapse and kill 2 people and it could have been more. Now the town, Mall owners and Retirement Living want Public monies to cover them so they can participate in the inquiry, are they kidding. First, Retirement Living a non-profit organization owned the Mall under their profitable company NorDev and knowing full well the condition sold the Mall to Nasarian, who I don't believe knew what he had really bought. Then there is the City of Elliot Lake who has been lieing, saying they didn't think the Mall was in such bad shape and nobody made a formal complaint. Pieces of concrete were coming down in the Mall. The Mayor, Fire Chief,City Engineers, Police, etc have walked around buckets catching the water from the leaking roof. We were all waiting for something to happen for years and it did. The City and the Chamber of Commerce are all patting themselves on the back right now as the groundwork for the new Mall is underway, now they are getting things done for free again and filling their pockets as usual. Can't wait to see their faces as reporters start asking question when the inquary starts. Maybe the Mayor will be able to put a sentence together now he has had time to practise.
