Ombudsman Finds Candiate List

Posted By: Russ Courtney · 10/25/2012 4:59:00 PM

In the city ombudsman's report into civic appointments that found interference in the process from the Mayor's office there were allegations that Rob Ford's staff circulated a list of preferred candidates to committee members.

Fiona Crean's initial report found no evidence such a list existed, but now says a list of candidates has been discovered.

She stopped short of saying it was a list of "preferred" candidates, but says there are 26 names under a number of different boards.

She says the finding has no impact of her report, it's just an additional piece of evidence.

Crean adds that the finding is consistent with statements from the Mayor's staff, telling an investigator there was in fact a list of candidates but it used for their own purposes and shared it only with the city managers office, when questions about it came up.

So what? Shouldn't the mayor be allowed to make appointments, let alone suggest candidates? What's the point of electing some one who can have no influence on the direction of city services?

@IreneB_8264 By this logic if these appointments are going to be political and not based on qualifications why not just let the councillors sit on the boards and skip appointing unelected citizens to manage taxpayers money?

Also, making a list like this is pretty much like a company hiring less qualified candidates who are the bosses friends.
