Caplan Eyeing Liberal Leadership: Sources

Posted By: Katie Franzios · 10/26/2012 12:01:00 PM

Former Liberal Health Minister David Caplan is seriously considering a run for the Ontario Liberal leadership.

Sources close to David Caplan say he wants to make a go at the top job. However, it was revealed that a group of "high level liberals" met with him this week to try to talk him out of it.

When reached by Newstalk 1010 via email, Caplan would not reveal his intentions, only saying he unavailable to speak about the issue today.

Caplan was health minister after George Smitherman, ultimately stepping down in 2009 the wake of the eHealth spending scandal.

The 47-year-old was first elected at MPP in 1997 in Toronto's Oriole riding. When the electoral map was changed, he became MPP for Don Valley East in 1999. He decided not to seek re-election last year.

He may make an interim sacrificial lamb because anyone that is currently tied to the existing administration, and that includes Smitherman, would be silly to run. Until the party comes clean about the gas plant and spending scandals it not possible for them to regain any credibility. Of course die hard Liberals will still blindly vote for them but thinking voters cannot put the same players back in office. But then I'm just a cockeyed optimist!

If i were a "high level Liberal" i would also try to talk Caplan and any other sensible leader out of running. Why would anyone want to have to pick up after the mess Dalton McGuinty created!
