Poll shows support for downtown relief line

Posted By: Justine Lewkowicz · 10/27/2012 5:39:00 AM

A new poll shows that Torontonians agree with the TTC that a downtown relief line is a priority.

The Forum Research poll for the Toronto Star shows that 61 per cent of those asked said a subway from Pape Station, down along King St to University Ave, is needed.

Even in Scarborough, a third of those asked said a downtown relief line is more important than a Scarborough subway.

More people also said the DRL needs to be built before a high-speed rail link to the airport.

Reading through the report issued last week, the DRL will not actually relieve the Yonge subway that much - extra riders from the north will add much more than the DRL can relieve. What is needed is for this to be extended all the way past Don Mills/Sheppard to Seneca. This will actually get people of the Yonge line.

What is really needed is for the TTC to design a cost effective DRL. The estimates here are about $450M per km. Vancouver has recently built grade-separated rapid transit for about $100M to $150M per km. If the TTC can not do this, let the private sector try.

we have such a line running; it's called the 504 King Streetcar running along King East, Queen to Jillys and up Broadview to Broadview Subway, where you walk across the platform to get the 100A.
